Expectations need to be set appropriately as the news around the film going through some algorithm to upscale it to 4K may lead to unreasonable hopes that this presentation is never going to satisfy, and based on the disappointment expressed by some in online circles around Criterion’s decision to forego a 4K UHD, it sounds as though expectations were a bit high.He pulled it off, but due to the standard-definition source (interlaced, even), it was always going to look a bit “problematic” on home video, especially the higher resolution formats like Blu-ray. It’s amazing how such a deep and precious film has got onto the big screen and out of the modern Hollywood commercial machine. Like so much of the director’s work, he pulls back the curtain on an accepted reality to reveal the disorientating darkness lurking underneath.

Approved by David Lynch, this new 4K master was undertaken by THE CRITERION COLLECTION with the support of STUDIOCANAL. One of the biggest misses in the supplements is that the restoration wasn’t covered, but the booklet at least features a section that details it.The plot starts with the idea of a person apparently living the ideal dream (the Western version anyway! The only other big disappointment is the lack of anything around the film's interesting restoration process. As the film charts a slow descent into a surrealist nightmare, the viewer seemingly has no more idea as to what’s real than the Nicki does, as different realities and timezones clash and collide through the narrative’s brazen elliptical weaves and jumps. While the decision to shoot in DV may have unleashed his creativity (and inspired some film students to boot) the ensuring freedom to experiment resulted in a film that is easy to admire yet slightly more difficult to love.
