About this deal

Joe Lynch was traveling along with his son when they spot a mommy car but it’s not just any car that looks like it belongs to Joe’s wife but really her in her car. The response he gets is both aggressive and cryptic and, what was supposed to be a simple inquiry, quickly escalates into a conflict. And the inclusion of a mini-cliffhanger at the conclusion of almost every chapter made it difficult to put down. I’ve read a few seriously lackluster psychological thrillers lately that had me wondering if many this genre as a whole was just no longer doing it for me.

But Logan keeps readers guessing as to exactly what happened to Ben, who is responsible for his fate, and exactly why Joe finds himself at the center of the mystery until the very end of the story. Crime by the Box will deliver a hand-selected, newly-released hardcover mystery, thriller, or suspense novel right to your door on a monthly basis. His life explodes when he sees his wife with a long time friend and realizes that they might be having an affair. He can trust no one, as his friends abandon him due to his connection to what has happened and he is suspended from his job.The main drawback for this novel is that it is sometimes repetitive in that condescending way that seems to imply the author doesn’t feel the reader is capable of keeping up. When picking up a book simply titled “Lies” it was pretty safe to go into this one expecting not to trust anything or anyone. I’ve heard raves of this book from friends across the pond and early readers here in the US alike, but my reading experience was unfortunately less than stellar. These are stories that entertained me, challenged me, thrilled me, and kept me on the edge of my seat; in this list you’ll find Gothic horror, Nordic Noir, psychological suspense, and much more; a wide array of crime fiction subgenres, but all excellent books that stood out from the pack for me in 2022. This is a high-tension Gone Girl scenario, except the reader doesn’t have the benefit of knowing the fate of the missing person; we are kept in the dark with the protagonist.

I do think the ending redeemed the story as I thought I had an idea where the story was going but my theory was not 100% accurate. Page-turning, fresh, and just the right amount of weird, THE FAMILY GAME is a perfect choice for your winter to-read list. By the time I finished the book I felt there were more positive things about the story than negative. At this point, Joe kinda comes to his senses and does what he should have done before — takes his son and tries to get the hell out of there.

Publication information is for the USA, and (unless stated otherwise) represents the first print edition.

He witnesses her arguing with family friend Ben, and life as he knew it will begin to unravel in a most spectacular fashion. The fabric of our lives can seem so thin when it is suddenly pulled out from under us, never more so than when it has been woven with lies, one overlapping another.

I read Lies with four of my book buddies, Melisa, Holly, Berit, and Mack, and it was just the type of delicious thriller I love to read and discuss with friends. Any "Author Information" displayed below reflects the author's biography at the time this particular book was published. When Joe sees his wife having a confrontation with family friend Ben, it's the first hint that she's been lying to him - about everything. Christmas is around the corner, and if you’re a reader who likes to theme your reads to the season, today’s blog post is for you! Parts of the story were also bogged down by what I felt were details that didn’t matter (for example, one of the characters taking out their smart phone, swiping over to an app, opening file manager, going through each folder, pulling up a file, closing it out, etc.Six days ago, Joe Lynch was a happily married man, a devoted father, and a respected teacher living in a well-to-do London suburb. Excited about a certificate he got at school, he convinces his dad to follow his mom into a parking garage and surprise her. Who wouldn't when electing to enter an occupation known for miserably low pay and a notoriously high workload.
