About this deal

Some subtler changes are displayed, such as the difference in police helmets between Scotland and England in the chapter relating to Berwick Rangers. Three years in the making, Steve has brought together a fabulous selection of archive images, some never-before-seen or have lain unseen for decades in the archive. On first seeing this book, I worried that it might be another homage to the “golden age” of Scottish football, where everything, invariably, was so much better than it is now.

The images are significant for what they show in terms of players and fans but also what is not on display.

Equally astonishing is a photo of Ibrox from the early 1960s where the aerial photo emphasises the whiteness of the uncovered terracing behind the goal. I’m putting together a book – a photo-led nostalgia book, not entirely a history tome – about how grounds used to look in the black and white era before the Taylor Report swept away standing terraces. The aim is to celebrate the experiences of standing in a swaying, tight-packed, excited/angry/celebrating/commiserating/local-derby-fevered football crowd.Perhaps it was the "away days" that were the best of all and all those scenes of triumph and disaster, joy and despair - are here. As the veteran journalist Chick Young says in the foreword, these are photos of the “good old, bad old days”. Wally Talbot and his son Howard (both sadly deceased) were Blackburn based photographers who captured images, in and around Blackburn, over many years. Squarely aimed at the sports nostalgia market, the book contains around 200 archive photos of team line-ups, action shots, spectators, Sevens tournaments, and the grounds where the game was played. Tell us why you liked or disliked the book; using examples and comparisons is a great way to do this.

With almost 200 photos of 42 football stadiums here that have lain unseen, in archives and rarely accessed collections, for decades. Well recommended even if you aren't one for Scottish football: they are well worth it for the photography and nostalgia alone! Lifted Over The Turnstiles Volumes 2 and 3 are, as former Scotland boss Craig Brown says in his foreword, “A photographic masterpiece. It contains interviews with his players, managerial peers and his wife Doris, as well as never-before-seen photos from newspaper and magazine archives. These are the places where your grandfather, father, uncles, brothers and friends exulted and cursed. The book (hopefully Vols 1, 2 and 3) will be a follow-up to my Lifted Over The Turnstiles 3-volume collection of books about Scottish football grounds: https://www.
