About this deal

She has a successful career as a doctor, engaged, soon to be married when out of the blue an old love of her's, Liam gets in contact with her and asks a favour. Each character elongated syllables distorted the messages, was in congruous and made everyone seem unintelligent. In this twisty new stand-alone novel from internationally bestselling author Nicci French, a young woman agrees to do a favor for her first love—but when things go horribly wrong, one small task turns into a murder investigation that completely upends her life, ensnaring her in a deadly web of secrets and lies. narration was bearable until it came to Jude's mother who sounded like some simpleton from On The Buses. When Liam unexpectedly turns up in Jude's life after ten years of no contact, asking her for a favour, she just can't say no.

I found Jude to be a very frustrating character, and I wanted to shake her numerous times and shout at her to stop going found to 'that house'. He was her first love, and even though she is now a successful doctor and about to get married, he will always be someone special to her.Excels at depicting an ordinary life swept away by horror' Observer ‘Fantastic – a breathless drumbeat of dread and suspense’ Lee Child ‘Heart-thumping, head-scratching, nail-biting stuff: The Favour is classic Nicci French. Having said that, I know this will not be a book for everyone, I may be in the minority on this one, but I did love the storyline. Come down the travelators, exit Sainsbury's, turn right and follow the pedestrianised walkway to Crown Walk and turn right - and Coles will be right in front of you. I was reading the book as part of a readalong with other bloggers organised by the Tandem Collective but found myself racing ahead as I was overtaken by a desperate need for answers.

Those are not direct quotes per se but these same questions are asked of Jude by EVERYONE in the book. Supposed intelligent dedicated physician somehow has enough time and stupidity to get herself involved with the one that got away and never apologised for almost killing her in a car crash 11 years earlier.

There are several very unlikable side characters in this book, but for some reason Jude seems to be drawn to these horrible people. I personally think many readers may not like her or find her irritating as her actions seem unbelievable (and silly even) as they don’t want to admit to themselves that perhaps that they would ever act like this. As Jude gets herself more and more enmeshed in what was Liam’s bohemian life, do her choices stretch the bounds of credibility?
