About this deal

The belt and braces approach here is to always install a fire hood over the fitting to protect any loft insulation from the heat generated by the light. This is certainly the case for any halogen lights as these typically generate a great deal of heat. If your loft has existing loft insulation in between the joists, measure the depth of it. Ideally, this base layer needs to have a depth of 100mm and come up to no more than 25mm above or below the joist. A second layer of at least 170mm can then be laid over the top of the joists to get you to the recommended building regulations guide of 270-300mm If there are any recessed downlights underneath the base layer – jump to the section ‘How to lay loft insulation around recessed downlights’. Step 7 Chipboard loft boards generally have a tongue and groove construction which allows them to neatly slot together. Standard loft boards come in 3 different sizes:

The roof space will be warmer than with standard loft insulation, so you won’t need to worry so much about freezing tanks and pipes. The damped hinge mechanism allows for safe and easy operation. In addition, it allows the Elite Vertical to be positioned behind a door, up to 40mm from the edge of the opening (80mm with special modification). The horizontal rafter, or ceiling joist timbers in your loft are there purely to hold up the ceiling below, not carry weights beyond normal domestic storage items. Types of Loft Boarding and Flooring This makes fixing the boards easier and takes the heads of the screws below the level of the floor so when you slide suitcases along the floor they do not catch and tear on the screws. Another good reason for using pilot holes is so the boards do not split when you screw them close to the edge. What are the benefits of Boarding a Loft? When cutting MDF and HDF loft boards you should always use a minimum of an FFP3 mask or mask with a P3 particle filter and only cut in a well ventilated area, preferably outside..Before going any further it must be stated that, when boarding a loft it must only be used to store items such as empty suitcases and other similar items. Unless your loft or attic has been converted professionally, it is not designed to carry loads heavier than this. You will see that in any part of the loft where there is, for example, a water tank, the floor is reinforced and, in a lot of cases, the rafters are given additional support by hanging timbers attached to the pitched section of the trusses.

This is usually done by either adding additional support beams, or RSJ’s to reduce the span of the existing timbers, or simply enlarging the timbers which sit on the load bearing walls on either side, or either end of the property. When laid correctly like this, the edge of any loft board that meets a joist can then be screwed down and fully supported. Cutting and Screwing Loft Boards and Flooring Panels to Board out the Loft Your choice of width roll is determined by your loft floor’s joist spacings. This is because the insulation is rolled between these joists. We recommend choosing one that’s as close to your joist spacing as possible – this minimises the need to trim off excess. As with any type of insulation, you need to make sure that the roof is dry and in good condition before adding any insulation. Also, right now many mortgage companies aren’t willing to offer loans for properties with foam insulation in the roof, which can make it very difficult to sell a property with this type of insulation. Insulation guards - also known as heat diffusers, loft caps or loft covers, they protect any recessed light fittings from overheating underneath the insulation. Buy as many as needed.
