With compact controllers, the feel/action of the keybed is often one of the first components to take a hit. With the SE49, Nektar set out to prevent this from happening. They developed a brand-new velocity-sensitive keybed. The aim was to provide a familiar, firm playability without adding to the bulk of the unit. Add three velocity curves to the mix, and you’ve got a truly expressive piece of kit! Intuitive DAW integrationNektarine also turns our AURA Beat Composer pad controller into an open-ended and powerful beat creation instrument, that allows the creation of kits from multiple plugins for unlimited sonic possibilites. This includes Nektar DAW Integration and deep plugin control in any DAW using Nektarine. WHAT MAKES NEKTAR MIDI CONTROLLERS SPECIAL? First, take a look at the Audio settings in your DAW. You will find a buffer size or latency setting, either in milliseconds (ms) or samples. A buffer size less than 512 samples or ~20ms is needed to play sound without audible delay. If your computer can handle a lower buffer size than that, set it as low as possible. The small control panel to the left of the keyboard provides you with a number of performance controls, including octave shift, sustain, pitch bend and more. Take control a notch further: Most soft- and hardware products with MIDI have their parameters assigned to so-called MIDI CC messages. This lets you do cool things such as changing filter cutoff, panning, effects bypass or any other parameter that has a MIDI CC assigned to it from a hardware control on your SE49. Four buttons and one MIDI-assignable fader to the left of the keys make the SE49 even more flexible: Shift the keyboard up or down -3/+4 octaves with multi-colored LED indicators showing the exact status. Or transpose the keys +/- 12 semitones with the transpose buttons right below. Nektar are known for their hassle-free DAW integration. It’s compatible with most major DAWs, including Logic Pro X, Cubase, Bitwig and many more! Custom MIDI assignments I'm writing this review after 3 weeks of using in my bedroom studio. Great build quality. Keys are not weighted but velocity sensitive, works perfectly. Modulation and Pitch Bend knobs work smoothly. Transposing option is available. With all this the price tag is a bargain, totally recommended.
