About this deal

The fourteenth book in this great series which I hope will keep going for a long while yet! For a variety of reasons I listened to the audio instead of reading the paper copy as I usually do. It was okay except for the 'local yokel' accent that the narrator gave Nelson. It made me laugh at moments when I was not supposed to, especially when all the other characters spoke so properly. There will never be a time when I am searching for inspiration when it comes to setting my books in Norfolk, because it is so full of wonderful stories and there are still so many for Ruth to unearth." As usual, the humor was great. I liked this mystery a lot. I love the characters, especially the recurring characters. I would have liked even more of Kate and of Ruth and of some of the recurring characters. There was a lot of time spent with the new characters. They were also interesting, and I got enough of a “fix” with the main characters to whom I’m attached, so no complaints. The whole Dr Ruth Galloway Mystery series - which along with Ms Griffiths' Stephens & Mephisto book series led to her winning the 2016 Crime Writers' Association Dagger in the Library Award for an author's whole body of work - has seen her central character take quite a veritable Weird Norfolk tour of the county.

Dark Angel, which was out early 2018, takes Ruth to Rome to investigate a group of bones in a tiny hilltop village near the Italian capital. Ruth decides to take a much-needed vacation and flies to Italy to Castello Degli Angeli along with her daughter Kate and friend Shona. Elly Griffiths is the pen name of Domenica de Rosa [1] (born 17 August 1963, in London), [2] a British crime novelist. She has written three series as Griffiths, one featuring Ruth Galloway, one featuring Detective Inspector Edgar Stephens and Max Mephisto, and the Harbinder Kaur series. Elly Griffiths even throws in a touch of the supernatural in the form of The Grey Lady who was the victim of an early plague who died from starvation. If anyone died in your household of the plague in the Middle Ages, your house was sealed shut with the remaining occupants. She can be seen wandering the marsh at night. I loved the touch of at the end of the book having an excerpt included from the science fiction novel about a cat that Kate is writing.Dr. Ruth Galloway is the head of the archaeology department at the University at Norfolk. She and her eleven year old daughter, Kate, live in a small cottage facing the Saltmarsh. Ruth and Kate's father, DCI Harry Nelson, continue to live separate lives as Harry has married. They've chosen to not let those pesky emotions get in the way. The stories in each book are standalone, however, the interaction between the main characters (namely Ruth and Detective Chief Inspector Harry Nelson) are not. They have a rather complicated relationship which we get to entangle thread by thread through each of the novels. There’s nothing dr. Ruth Galloway hates more than amateur archaeologists, and they pop in the novels every now and then, not to mention there is a dead body every time.

As always, my idea of who was behind the crimes was wrong. That said, I found the climax of the book unrealistic and it was one of the least satisfying of the series. Flip side, I was pleased by the ending as far as Ruth is concerned. I am so grateful to Norfolk for giving me all these amazing stories and for the people of the county who have received them with such wonderful kindness," said Elly, who lives near Brighton.Out on 25 April in the USA, The Last Remains launched in the UK at the end of January – and had the series faithful laughing and crying in equal measure. If you’re new to the Ruth Galloway series, this is not the book for you, but if you’re a regular you’ll delight in the subtle little reminders of previous novels and the characters they contained. The discovery of a body hidden behind the wall of a Kings Lynn coffee shop is the starting point for a story that has repercussions for many of the regular characters, with Cathbad in particular acting even more oddly than usual. A book to relish and a fitting finale. Read our review here.

The author gets her inspiration for her books from her husband, who gave up banking in the city to retrain as an archaeologist and enjoys digging up bones and discovering their history. Elly Griffiths is interested in history, archaeology, myths, and legends.

At the same time, Ruth gets a letter claiming to be from the very individual who introduced her to Nelson – her erstwhile mentor – except he's supposed to be dead. Or so they thought. The narrative threads pull together, as the familiar cast of characters are affected in different ways by their imposed isolation and the ever-present threat of the virus. A final thrilling denouement unmasks an unexpected and devious villain, whilst also resolving several other sub-plots. There is some foreshadowing of changes in the Ruth-Nelson-Michelle triangle in the future. First presented in the first book of the series, The Stranger Diaries, Harbinder is a single, gay Sikh woman who embodies the epitome of a crafted character.. But it’s the second book, The Post Script Murders, where she truly shines.
