Dramatizing the creative process, particularly that of a writer, is never easy to do on film. Strong’s concept, as much as I could understand it, is that Salinger’s youthful attitude ended up mirroring the startling rebelliousness of his most famous character, Holden Caulfield. That’s as close as Strong gets to showing how Salinger drew inspiration from the world around him, though there’s very little mention of any of his other works, particularly his short stories about the Glass family, beyond their titles. Rebel in the Rye is a 2017 American biographical drama film directed and written by Danny Strong. It is based on the book J. D. Salinger: A Life by Kenneth Slawenski, about the life of writer J. D. Salinger during and after World War II. The film stars Nicholas Hoult, Zoey Deutch, Kevin Spacey, Sarah Paulson, Brian d'Arcy James, Victor Garber, Hope Davis, and Lucy Boynton.

What to know

Salinger is played by Nicholas Hoult, one of my favorite young-ish actors who can’t quite reach ****. He’s a fine actor, and has lots of screen charm but hasn't found his real breakthrough yet. At least in my opinion.

The second half of the movie is interesting inasmuch as watching any real-life genius go bananas is interesting. But the extreme compression of time (plus the fact that none of the actors age) eventually becomes laughable. Then there’s the most cringeworthy end card since The Imitation Game’s “today we call them computers”. Barring a few time jumps, our story begins as Jerry Salinger (Nicholas Hoult) enters the Columbia University creative writing class of the Story magazine editor Whit Burnett, a droll-as-hell Kevin Spacey, whose theatrical lectures are, quite frankly, more succinct and penetrating than any college class I ever took. Under Burnett’s tutelage, Salinger learns to reel in his clever voice for the sake of narrative, finding a harmony that (as most 20th-century readers would agree) made him one of the greatest American writers. This drama is one of the best-written films of 2017 and is Hoult's richest work yet. Spacey has won two Oscars, but here, none of the wires are visible as they are in his sly, somewhat meta House of Cardsperformance. He entirely inhabits Whit and is gifted with a real arc for his character. In a very strong supporting cast (including Victor Garber, Sarah Paulson, Zoey Deutsch, and Lucy Boynton of Sing Street), it's the wonderful Hope Davis who stands out as Salinger's mother. The scene in which she receives a copy of his novel is quietly moving. Whiskybase B.V. On the nose, Rebel 100 is hitting up front with heavy honey, suggesting considerable sweetness. I’m getting lots of citrus and stone fruit (apricot), along with freshly cut lumber. The rye has a more grain-forward, rye bread character, and there’s something distinctly buttery here as well. The overall impression is buttered rye toast, with cinnamon sugar and a side of fruit.
