About this deal

From the get-go we know the name of The Sandman, that’s not the problem, what we’re concerned with is whether his wife was aware that he was a serial killer and whether she was a knowing participant in some of his crimes. Daniel Miller is a wealthy hedge fund manager and has been running amok for years. His wife, Carrie, is absolutely distraught that her vague suspicions have proven to be true. When they search their house they find some evidence that they feel incriminates her as an accomplice…or at the least, a person who knew about her husband’s crimes and failed to report them, choosing instead to help him by providing an alibi or covering them up. You know what's the worst thing that will happen to you once you finish the last Eddie Flynn book by Steve Cavanagh? Wonder how to cope until the next one!!! 😱😫 There's plenty you won't see coming (and it's all the better for it). This is easily my favourite of Steve's books Now this book is set in the usual Steve Cavanagh style, with chapters from the killer’s point of view interspersed amongst the trial scenes and those in which Eddie and the team try to get to the bottom of the case. This was the one thing which both did and didn’t quite work for me with this story. We knew who the killer was, even if they were missing, but with chapters told from their perspective it made me start to question whether this wasn’t just the most elaborate double bluff. But if things weren’t quite as expected, then just what was in play? I did guess the truth, the big reveal, ahead of the story, but that wasn’t an issue. Watching Eddie slowly come to the same realisations, seeing the threat impacting them all, was where the true impact of the book is felt. If anything it made them more acutely aware of what was at risk and the scenes in the courtroom played out in the usual mix of tension and entertainment. Eddie Flynn is a showman, but a skilled on. This case was no different.

It’s another fast paced, unputdownable ride from the pen of Cavanagh. Everything you love from Flynn is here including his underhand, yet legal, ways of getting results. And with multiple viewpoints from characters you know and care about (or will, if this is your first outing) and also a smattering of journal entries which give the reader extra insight into what Carrie actually did know, you’ll be hooked from the Prologue. Well this case really puts Eddie’s skills to the test. With 2 days until the case starts Carrie skips bail. Without her testimony, there is near zero chance of getting her acquitted. But Eddie has to win this case to save a life that is dear to him. Wow, with this powerful latest instalment of this terrific series I don’t know if my heart is in my mouth or it’s sinking, all I can tell is that it’s all over the place! In addition, Cavanagh also introduces the character of Gabriel Lake, a former FBI agent turned private investigator who specialises in catching serial killers. A brilliant man with interesting ideas about the way to hunt killers which goes against the established theories of the FBI, Lake is an integral part of the plot, as he helps Flynn with his case in the hope of catching the Sandman. However, there is also a deep well of anger within Lake, due to both his past and his personal connection to the Sandman case, and this becomes a major problem for the protagonists as the book goes on. You never quite know what Lake’s motivations or intentions are, and he ends up adding an entire extra layer of complexity to an already twisty plot.

Paige Delaney of the FBI is outside an expensive house in Old Westbury, New York. They are hunting the Coney Island Killer otherwise known as The Sandman who to date has killed 17 victims and has a grotesque and unique signature with sand. They have reason to believe the Sandman is wealthy hedge fund manager Daniel Miller, he’s not there but his wife Carrie is. She is arrested and six months later indicted by the grand jury on six counts of homicide as she is considered his accomplice. Otto Peltier is her lawyer but he’s not a criminal lawyer and so he pleads with Eddie and his team to take the case but Eddie takes some convincing to accept. Like many others Eddie is full of questions. Is Carrie innocent? Has she been duped and betrayed by Daniel? How can you not know your husband is a serial killer? Kate believes Carrie is a victim too but many a Joe Public believes she’s guilty so would she ever get a fair trial? The team are up against it with this one but let’s face it, when are they not??!! Meanwhile The Sandman, who has been in hiding since Carrie’s arrest, strikes again and this time it’s the witnesses that are his target…

Carrie’s husband, Daniel Miller is being sought in connection with about 13 murders but hasn’t been seen for a year. Is he even still in the country? He is known as the Sandman for reasons which you learn when you the book. I’m not going to say 🤐. Now the DA has charged Carrie with being an accomplice or at least knowing about 6 of these murders. She went to Peltier (as he was Danny’s lawyer) wanting legal advice about what to do, what to tell the police. She insists that, while she developed suspicions about her husband’s murderous activities, she was not absolutely sure and had no actual evidence. The Accomplice sees Flynn & Brooks take on client Carrie Miller, wife of notorious serial killer The Sandman. Carrie claims she knew nothing about her husband’s night-time pursuits but she’s being put on trial as his accomplice – as witness statements emerge of sightings of two people in the victim’s vicinity at the time of the killings. Nobody, except Eddie and his team, believes that and so the race is on to defend her from being convicted. Zelfs Eddie Flynn... With his wife on trial, Daniel Miller is forced to come out of hiding to save her from a life sentence. He will kill to protect her and everyone involved in the case is a target. But that’s what the Flynn books are all about. Good versus evil – with good winning out most of the time. A recent book event saw Steve being asked if there’d be another instalment. We were told yes – Eddie will last forever, but as for the other characters – all bets are off! Book 7 in the Eddie Flynn series based in the lawyers hometown of New York, this one was an absolute blast. Eddie Flynn won't take a case unless his client is innocent. Now, he has to prove to a jury, and the entire world, that Carrie Miller was just another victim of the Sandman. She didn't know her husband's dark side and she had no part in the murders. But so far, Eddie and his team are the only ones who believe her.

I received a gifted copy of this book to read in exchange for an honest review as part of the readalong hosted by Tandem Collective UK.Daniel Miller vermoordde veertien mensen voordat hij verdween. Zijn vrouw, Carrie, staat nu terecht als zijn handlanger, en het is aan Eddie Flynn om de jury – en de rest van de wereld – ervan te overtuigen dat Carrie Miller het zoveelste slachtoffer was van de Zandman. Kudos, Mr. Cavanagh, for keeping me entertained and highly in tune with the world of legal thrillers.
