About this deal

But we've managed to piece the tale together for you. So, get cosy, grab a cuppa, and get ready for the terrifying tale of the 'lantern men'. Who are the 'lantern men'? While Nelson is pleased when Ivor March is found guilty of murdering two women, he would still love to convict him for two other deaths he is sure that March committed. The two women were found buried in the garden of March’s girlfriend’s house. There was enough DNA evidence to convict him but no sign of the other bodies. Then, strangely, March says he will talk to Nelson if he brings along Dr Ruth Galloway. He tells them where to find the further bodies and wants Ruth to dig them up - Phil (Ruth’s former boss at UNN) supervised the earlier dig and, apparently, missed things. Well, he IS an idiot!

In this book, Ruth has moved from her cottage on the Norfolk saltmarshes to live with her new partner, Frank, in Cambridge. Kate is doing well in her new school and life seems to have settled into a different rhythm. But it’s not long before Ruth is asked by Nelson to help find missing victims of a recently convicted murderer called Ivor March. It’s suspected that March has been killing women over many years, and now he’s in jail he’s taunting the police about where bodies might be buried. Worryingly, he’s also demanding that Ruth is involved because she’s the only person he trusts to do the digging. The lights dance and twist their way over the dark surface of the great mere, or skip erratically in and out of reed beds and are apparently drawn to the sound of whistling. Now I thought - no, more than thought - I was convinced that I knew the answer, that I had it all figured out. 😂🤣😂🤣 I didn't. Wasn't even close.... But it's not just the historic buildings which are roamed by spirits. The vast, flat expanse can stretch for miles with no signs of life, let alone any lights. A convicted murderer informs Dr Ruth Galloway and DCI Nelson that more of his victims have been buried across Norfolk. Can Ruth and Nelson find the bodies, or are they being lured into a trap?

Much has changed in the latest edition of Elly Griffith's forensic archaeologist Dr Ruth Galloway series. For a start she is living with the American Frank and her young daughter, Kate in Cambridge, teaching at St Jude's College. She has just completed her latest book at the peaceful writers and artists retreat, Grey Walls, run by Crissy Martin. To her surprise, unusually she finds herself connecting with Crissy, a rare event indeed. In Norfolk, DCI Harry Nelson is not happy that Ruth has moved to Cambridge, and definitely not happy she is living with Frank, and he is unable to see Kate as often either. However, he is happy when serial killer, Ivor March, is found guilty of the murder of two young women buried in his girlfriend, Chantal's garden, the evidence of his culpability sufficient for the jury to convict him. In a 1900 copy of the Eastern Counties magazine a novel way of escaping their clutches is outlined for those who find themselves walking the Fens. But this light was strange, it had a deadly presence that crept closer with each step the fisherman took. Yes. I couldn’t believe it. But he had a proviso. He always does. He can’t resist playing games. . . . He wants you to excavate them. . . . He won’t tell us where to look unless you do the digging. You don’t have to agree though.’

It is thought that the Lantern Man lured the unsuspecting Joseph Bexfield to his death in the Norfolk Fens. The wherryman had been enjoying a drink with his fellow sailors in August 1809 when he remembered he had left a parcel for his wife on the wherry. Only one person has been known to avoid the deadly spirit this way. After seeing his light and fearing his safety, he pushed his face into the dirt and prayed that the spirit would spare him. In the meantime, DCI Harry Nelson and DI Judy Johnson are interviewing Ivor March who has been arrested for the murders of two young women. March buried the bodies in the garden of his present girlfriend's home. Chantal still believes that he is innocent even with DNA saying otherwise. Now Marsh insists that Ruth do the forensic digging. Oh, and by the way, Crissy happens to be March's ex-wife.
