I don't know what you think you were doing up in that tree," she continued. "Any fool would have known you couldn't have got down." I think I like Julia Quinn's earlier romances more, because they at least had a bit of fire to them. This book was dull. When we begin the novel, the heroine is up a tree trying to rescue a cat. Then getting down from the roof takes about two chapters. There's a couple more chapters at a dinner table where they all tease each other and the heroine, Billie's, sister feels left out. Then there's talk of a party. Then the hero, George, and the heroine, almost kiss and immediately go on the defensive to themselves that they don't really like each other, not really. The relationship between Billie and George progresses in a way that feels very natural because we are given context for how they have perceived each other previously, and they are placed in increasingly intimate situations and conversations that allow them to gradually understand one another better. I really enjoyed that this is not a story in which the characters change a great deal or have huge revelations about who they are or how they should live their lives, which is common in romances where there is initially a great deal of dislike between the couple. If anything, Billie and George both become more comfortable and certain about who they are and that they are truly living the lives they wish to be living. It's quite sweet to have a story where the people don't need to change who they are to be in love (even though the characters always change for the better in stories where that is the case); this story is far more about two people getting to know one another. Even though they've know each other their entire lives, Billie and George finally come to understand each other.

It was in the tree,” she explained, although heaven knew why. It wasn’t as if he’d requested further explanation. Billie Bridgerton and George Rokesby, family friends who cannot stand the sight of each other, in Because of Miss Bridgerton. Billie gingerly shifted her position, bending her legs so that she could rest her chin on her knees. He blinked at her speedy acquiescence. She tried for a smile and settled for a shrug. She had two brothers by blood and three more who might as well have been brothers in the Rokesby household. Four if she included George, which she wasn’t quite sure she did.

They were childhood best friends. They later became family when she married Edward's elder brother, George. People ranked The Viscount Who Loved Me, a perennial fan favorite, as the best book of the Bridgerton series for its enemies-to-lovers trope "full of banter and chemistry" with character development for the central couple, "both as a pair and on their own." [6] The story is also of a blossoming relationship. Billie and George begin to spend more time together and they begin to learn more about one another. Oh bloody hell, what did it matter what the time was? It wasn’t going to get her off this damned roof.

Annie: A solid 4 stars. I enjoyed this one more than the latest few releases from Quinn but I’m still holding off until I’ve read more in the series to determine if its as good as the Bridgertons! But then, off in the distance she saw a flash of movement, and unless the local beasts had recently made the move to bipedalism, it was quite clearly human. Her face went suddenly pale. Even her eyes, normally a fathomless shade of brown, seemed to blanch down to something decidedly more tepid. I am giving this five stars because I enjoyed it so much. The characters were delightful, the dialogue was amusing and I just wanted to hide away and read the whole thing without stopping. Of course I could not do that but I came pretty close:)
