About this deal

An overdose of paracetamol is dangerous and capable of causing serious damage to the liver and kidneys.

Adults aged 16 years and over should take one sachet every four hours as needed. Do not take more than six sachets in 24 hours. If you're taking medicines for high blood pressure you shouldn't take Beechams breathe clear, because the decongestant may make your blood pressure medicine less effective. Beechams breathe clear sachets contain two active ingredients, the painkiller paracetamol (600mg) and a decongestant called phenylephrine hydrochloride (10mg). The powder in the sachets is dissolved in hot water to make a hot drink.Tamiflu and Relenza are antiviral medicines that doctors occasionally prescribe to treat flu infections and help control outbreaks. Warnings and precautions: Aspirin should be used with caution in patients with hypertension, mild to moderate renal or hepatic impairment, or in patients who are dehydrated. Haematological and haemorrhagic effects can occur, which should be reported to a doctor. Caution in patients with G6PDH deficiency. Excessive intake of caffeine should be avoided. Patients with rare hereditary problems of galactose intolerance, the Lapp lactase deficiency or glucose-galactose malabsorption should not take this medicine. Should not be given to children aged under 16 years unless specifically indicated (e.g. for Kawasaki's disease). Patients who suffer from asthma, allergic disease, kidney or liver problems should consult their doctor before taking this product. Allergic reactions such as a rash or itching. Stop using this medicine and get medical advice if you think you've had an allergic reaction to it.

Sore throat medicine: Sore throat medicine is designed to help relieve the pain and discomfort associated with a sore throat. It may contain anesthetics, such as benzocaine or lidocaine, which numb the throat to reduce pain. Some sore throat medicines also contain ingredients like honey or lemon to soothe the throat and provide additional relief. Symptoms of paracetamol overdosage in the first 24 hours are pallor, nausea, vomiting, anorexia and abdominal pain. Liver damage may become apparent 12 to 48 hours after ingestion. Abnormalities of glucose metabolism and metabolic acidosis may occur. In severe poisoning, hepatic failure may progress to encephalopathy, haemorrhage, hypoglycaemia, cerebral oedema, and death. Acute renal failure with acute tubular necrosis, strongly suggested by loin pain, haematuria and proteinuria, may develop even in the absence of severe liver damage. Cardiac arrhythmias and pancreatitis have been reported. Dosage: Adults, children aged 16 years and over and elderly: 2 caplets every 4 to 6 hours as required. Do not take more than 8 caplets in 24 hours. Do not take continuously for more than 7 days without medical advice. Not recommended for children under 16 years old. This product should not be used by patients taking other sympathomimetics (such as decongestants, appetite suppressants and amphetamine-like psychostimulants).Side effects: See SPC for full details. Thrombocytopenia, agranulocytosis. Anaphylaxis, cutaneous hypersensitivity reactions including skin rashes and angioedema. Bronchospasm and dyspnoea, hepatic dysfunction, and acute pancreatitis. Mydriasis and acute angle closure glaucoma. Tachycardia and palpitations. Nervousness, irritability, restlessness, excitability, headache, dizziness, insomnia, increased blood pressure, nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, abdominal discomfort. Dysuria and urinary retention. It's fine to take Beechams cold & flu sachets with plain ibuprofen or aspirin (assuming these are appropriate for you). However, don't take them with co-codamol, co-dydramol or Tramacet because these contain paracetamol.

Phenylephrine overdosage is likely to result in effects similar to those listed under adverse reactions. Additional symptoms may include hypertension and possibly reflux bradycardia. In severe cases confusion, hallucinations, seizures and arrythmias may occur. However the amount required to produce serious phenylephrine toxicity would be greater than required to cause paracetamol-related toxicity. Empty the contents of the sachet into a cup. Add half a cup of hot (not boiling) water and stir to dissolve. You can add cold water and sugar if you want before drinking. Do not take with other flu, cold or decongestant products. Do not take with any other paracetamol-containing products. Treatment with activated charcoal should be considered if the overdose has been taken within 1 hour. Plasma paracetamol concentration should be measured at 4 hours or later after ingestion (earlier concentrations are unreliable). Treatment with N-acetylcysteine may be used up to 24 hours after ingestion of paracetamol, however, the maximum protective effect is obtained up to 8 hours post-ingestion. The effectiveness of the antidote declines sharply after this time. If required the patient should be given intravenous N-acetylcysteine, in line with the established dosage schedule. If vomiting is not a problem, oral methionine may be a suitable alternative for remote areas, outside hospital. Management of patients who present with serious hepatic dysfunction beyond 24 hours from ingestion should be discussed with the NPIS or a liver unit.Indications: Relief of sinus pain and the symptoms of colds and influenza, including fatigue and drowsiness. If you're taking medicines for high blood pressure you shouldn't take Beechams cold & flu, because the decongestant may make your blood pressure medicine less effective. Side effects: See SPC for full details. Hypersensitivity reactions including skin rashes, urticaria, allergic dermatitis, angioedema, and anaphylaxis. Bronchospasm, hepatic dysfunction, thrombocytopenia, agranulocytosis and acute pancreatitis.
