About this deal

A well written and timely book, looking at the benefits which relatively simple and low-cost farming measures can yield, if a little thought is applied. You’ll probably be aware that previous European Union regulations actually penalised farmers who let their hedges grow too long, or those who allowed native flora and fauna to return to their fields. With mud on his boots and hope in his heart, Fiennes tells a powerful and uplifting story of food, farming and living with nature"

Rooted offers us an honest look at the farming life today. It is not an easy way to make a living, but through Langford's personal story - and those of who she meets - we appreciate how it offers a connection with the land, and a firmer sense of our place in the world. Raw, earthy and inspiring.'- Cal Flyn, author of Islands of Abandonment

Doors open at 6.00pm for a 6.15pm start as Jake discusses his debut book with FarmED Founder, Ian Wilkinson. The discussions surrounding how farming methods can have a positive impact on our countryside, will conclude with an audience Q&A and a book signing.

It was hard to leave Raveningham – ‘I’d been there for 24 years, and it was comfortable and familiar. I was divorced and living alone but I would be moving away from my children. It was a very emotional moment telling Nicholas I was leaving because he’d put his trust in me and allowed me to do what I did. But, three and a half years later, here I am.’ But there is a quiet revolution taking place, and it is coming up through the soil. Pioneered by a small but rapidly growing regenerative food and farming movement in the UK and globally, which seeks to overturn how we have farmed and eaten over the last 70 years. Our film, Six Inches of Soil, tells the story of extraordinary farmers, communities and small businesses, who are leading the way in transforming how our food is produced and our land cared for. So he did. He turned up to a soundproof booth and the producer said, ‘Let’s start at 10 and break at 11 for 20 minutes, then have lunch from one to two.’ ‘No,’ said Jake, ‘We need to get this done – no breaks and we’ll stop for a 10-minute sandwich.’ But wild game shooting is a different matter, and he loved it at Raveningham. ‘Everything made sense. Agri-environment had just started; I was looking to improve conditions for ground-nesting birds – overflowing hedges and grassy banks. I would spend hours walking and observing – I used to just go into the woods and sit and listen. The woods tell you what’s going on.’ This amount will be used to fully fund the post production rather than just the editing. The extra funds will pay for technical expertise and time such as sound mixing, colour grading, animation and music. All these elements mean the film will be screened for you at cinematic quality.Unfortunately however Jake Fiennes’ book just didn’t hit the spot for me. The mix of biography, history, facts and figures and descriptive narratives feels very disjointed and somewhat arrogant. I don’t know anyone who has a role similar to mine, and there’s still loads to do.’ He credits his success at Holkham with being able to engage with anyone from royalty to ministers to hedge layers. ‘Because of my upbringing and interesting education, I have an ability to speak to people in a language they understand, whether it’s a duke or a forester. I wouldn’t recommend going to 13 different schools to everyone, but actually there are fringe benefits.’
