About this deal

So let’s say you own a Manuel Carvalho and Alpha owns a Manuel Carvalho. Both of you now have an incentive to make sure that Manuel Carvalho ranks and ranks reasonably high to maximize your profits. In this arrangement, it’d be best if you allied with Alpha to auction off more Manuel Carvalhos and ensure its high ranking. That is one of the greatest stunts I've ever seen, and surely one of the greatest stunts ever filmed. I don't even remember the movie, but I sure remember that train stunt. The term “classic” gets thrown around liberally in board gaming and it’s easy to be cynical in these days of re-released, overproduced deluxe editions and definitive collections. But “ Modern Art”, from prolific designer Reiner Knizia, is definitely a contender for the title, both due to its age- it was released three decades ago- and how highly it is regarded by people within the hobby. There are four lifts in the Natalie Bell Building, by the main stairs on each floor. You can reach the lifts from the Turbine Hall. These lifts are being prioritised for people who are not able to use the stairs or escalators Even if the people here tonight were initially lured into the auction room by a love of art, they find themselves participating in a spectacle where the dollar value of the work has virtually slaughtered its other meanings." -Sarah Thornton.

In each of the four rounds of Modern Art, players will offer up paintings in turn and bid on their cards until one artist has had five pieces of art put up for sale. At this point, the round ends with the fifth work of art unsold and the Artists are then ranked according to the number of their paintings offered for auction this round. The three most popular are then allocated prices for their individual paintings, with players receiving thirty, twenty or ten dollars for their paintings respectively. The game is played in four rounds. In the second, third, and fourth rounds the value of paintings at the end of a round depends not just on how the artist did in that round, but carry over from previous rounds as well. Players are dealt additional cards in the second and third (but not fourth) rounds. The foundation for Modern Art lies in understanding where the money comes from. From there, you’ll need to understand how to calculate profit. To start, money comes to you in one of two ways. The first way is from purchasing pretty paintings and redeeming them for profit. The second way is from selling paintings. The question then becomes how to maximize your take from each of those activities. To do that, we turn to basic accounting, using the concept of cost, revenue, and overall profit in our analysis. Bags and items larger than cabin bag size (55cm x 40cm x 20cm) are not permitted in the building. Potentially dangerous objects are also not permitted. Skateboards, scooters, and folding bike policy In each round players take turns to be the auctioneer, offering up one of the cards in their hand to the highest bidder. Everyone then bids using their secret stash of cash to win the auction, or abstain if they prefer, with the Auctioneer receiving the money from the winning player. The game continues like this over the four rounds and at the end, whoever reveals they have the most money is the winner.

Score: 8.5/10

Closed/Secret Auction: When this type of painting is auctioned, each player secretly bids the amount they are willing to pay in a closed fist. Once everyone has made their decision, everyone simultaneously reveals and the player with the highest bid wins. In the event of a tie, the player closest to the the auctioneer is the victor. What is that I hear you say? “Is Dan finally using quotes as subtitles again? It’s been ages since he did that. I love when he does that.” Why yes, I am, and thank you for your kind words that I am totally not subjugating you to metaphorically and that are genuine, completely real words of encouragement that came out of your totally real human mouth. I needed that. This is even more relevant if you put in those double-painting auctions. Timed well, you can bring about chaos and capture more value from an auction than you otherwise would. Develop (informal) alliances Two heads are better than one and that adage holds true in Modern Art where two heads can better manipulate the market than one. The idea behind forming an alliance is simple: with all the market manipulation that goes on in a game of Modern Art, you want someone on your team who has an interest in manipulating the value of the paintings from the same painter you want to manipulate. A potent Manuel Carvalho alliance. Growing up I heard criticisms of modern and contemporary art many times. How could something so abstract and seemingly meaningless be called art? Can’t a child do that? It’s all pretentious navel-gazing, deliberately obscure for obscurity’s sake, separate from any notion of beauty and truth. Great art was that which demonstrated skill, I thought, and found myself thinking that the most detailed, precise paintings were the greatest. Romantic art, which combined that technical precision with Large, Great subjects, was my favorite for a time.

What a beautiful twist! As a particular person’s art sells, the more players want to put other art from them up for auction, knowing that it has a higher perceived value. But the more players do that, the more the players who got that art early (when it was cheaper) will benefit. It’s one of the most fascinating game theory situations I’ve ever encountered in a board game, as the way out from an early deficit is to collaborate with one or more opponents to subvert the expected values that people have been operating with. Water Fountains are located next to the toilets in the Natalie Bell building on Levels 1, 2, 3 and 4. Although simplistic, this feels thematic, with the “hottest” artists’ work being valued highest.

My oldest daughter played clarinet and I got her a middle grade one so we didn't have to rent it. Of course, just after we got it she quits.

Anyways, the game. The game was not what I was expecting it to be. I think I already made that clear already. I don’t know why I thought it would be a condensed version of Modern Art, as it would essentially be the same game. And in that vein, what would be the point? What Modern Art the Card Game is, is a simple little market manipulation game. There are no bidding mechanisms in the game at all. A stark contrast to the Modern Art board game itself. Modern Art is a 3-5 player game where players buy and sell paintings of famous painters via unique auction styles for maximum gains. There are 5 artist cards that are always displayed during the game. These artist cards are used to house value tokens and award tokens. These tokens in turn will give you a value for what each of the artworks from each artist are worth (in points). The tokens remain in play during each of the four rounds. The award tokens are placed by players which will boost each artwork by the selected artist by 2 points. The value tokens are awarded based on the cards you decide to play. If (collectively) Marina Martins has the most artworks played, their artist card will receive a value token of 3. Then whichever artist has the second and third most will receive a value token of 2 and 1 respectively.

That aside, the potency of Modern Art’s satirical bite is lessened by economic reality. Yes, the money thrown around significant pieces of art seems insane, and yes it feels artless to think of a painting as an investment or solid asset. But I imagine that a lot of the big money in art is able to subsidize, in effect, art that wouldn’t exist otherwise. Perhaps it stifles some other art, or creates trends that we might not approve of. But that’s beside the point–the fact that value is subjective, and may be informed by economic calculation, isn’t much of a showstopper. If it were a debate argument I’d call it a kritik without a viable alternative. So yes, there is a lot to Modern Art. There are a ton of wrenches you can throw into the system and a lot of manipulating you can do. Do those well and you’ll be in a very good spot to win. The logical next question is what levers you have at your disposal to clear up the uncertainty and tilt the field in your favor? Here are three tips that I think are worth using. Understand your market positioning and market power. Factor in your team’s artistic skills and technical capabilities. Avoid art styles that would be too complex or challenging to actually implement with your resources. Go for something achievable.
