Our verdict If you ever did the volcano experiment at school you know how this goes. It's very visually impressive. That said, don't use bicarbonate of soda to clean red wine stains. When we tried it, it appeared to react with the wine stain and we were left with a large patch of carpet with a blue tinge. In case you've never used a bar stain remover, the instructions were clear and the shape of the bar made it easy to apply. It did create a lot of lather, so the formula could easily spread out of the stain. All of this comes at a fair price, too. "The bottle isn't huge," notes our tester. "But, you still get enough to work on really large or tough stains. The bristle applicator is a major bonus as the friction really seemed to help lift some of the tougher stains, like makeup."

When considered in a head-to-head scenario, though, the stain remover's performance didn't measure up to other options. In fact, Lisa our buyer was so eager to demonstrate just how impressive its stain-removing powers were that she sought out some rather dubious-looking stains on the meeting room carpet and made them disappear in front of our very eyes. It’s all thanks to the oxygen-activated bubbles, which get right down into the fibres of fabrics, lifting the stain out. Plus, it's a cinch to use, though the process can be a bit messy in comparison to any spray you might use. All bar applications are a little messier than just spraying something on, but one good part of that is there is no plastic bottle! Wash hands thoroughly after handling. Texture of carpet We compare the cleaned zones to an unstained piece of carpet to see if there has been an effect on the carpet's texture. We examine them directly after cleaning and then after the zones have dried. Store in cool dry place- avoid moisture ingress and temperatures above 40°C. Replace lid after use. Do not mix with chlorine bleach. No matter which application method you go with, keep the advice of Cohoon in mind. Add the powder using a teaspoon (tsp) and the dosage guidance below to boost stain removal. Suitable for use in washing machines, for hand washing and soaking or for use as a pre-treatment prior to washing. This product seemed to work better on set-in stains. For those spots and smears that you've been putting off, or that need more attention, it's worth your consideration—as long as it's not wine or foundation, as those faded but were not completely removed. It also has a very light scent, which our tester found to be pleasant.

The makeup stain proved to be tough for even some of our most highly performing stain removers, but this Shout formula was up to the task, earning a sky-high score. Just a faint hint of the stain remained after we tried it, a far more promising performance than most of the other products tested. For an effective stain remover that doubles as a "stink remover," too, look no further than HEX. The cleaner has a slight lemon scent that nicely covered up the normal chemical smell that cleaners typically have. The product itself is noted as fragrance-free, containing no added fragrances. The scent comes from the formula itself, which also happens to be biodegradable and cruelty-free. Crude palm oil and palm kernel oil are used in the production and supply of vegetable soap prills that we use in the manufacture of certain products. Our vegetable soap is made from blends of palm oil, palm kernel oil and coconut oil. This laundry staple is excellent for washing stained cotton and synthetic laundry, but also amazing at removing burnt-on food from saucepans and brightening up dirty bathtubs. 2. Chlorine (household) bleach

Even better, the noteworthy results are a breeze to come by, thanks to the brush-and-bottle combination. We love that it was extremely easy to use, especially when working with large stains. While we liked the built-in brush, you could also squirt the product on, especially if you're spot-cleaning a small stain. We tried two different bicarb mixes for these tests. One with warm water and one with vinegar. With both mixes we sprinkled the bicarbonate of soda over the stain, fully covering it. Then we poured over the liquid until the stains were drenched. With OxiClean stain remover, the length of time you let the product sit can make a big difference. The longer you let the product set, the more it removes the stain. A heads-up that applying the cleaner to the stain takes some effort, because you have to mix the powder in a spray bottle and the process can get messy. You can also use it when pre-soaking laundry, though, and overall it was relatively easy to use. If you're currently managing your laundry without a stain remover in the mix, please first accept our humble congratulations. Second, allow us to make a few suggestions in case the day finally arrives when you'll need to add one to your routine. Laundry stain removers use enzymes or oxidation to break down and remove tough stains on clothing, and they offer a more targeted approach to spot removal than traditional detergent. As Kathy Cohoon, franchise owner at Two Maids & A Mop, says, "Stain removers are going where they should," unlike general detergents that wash an entire article of clothing. Dose as recommended in the table below using warm to hot water (40-60°C). Ensure the powder is fully dissolved and soak for 30-60 minutes. Wash as normal, rinse and dry. For extra tough stains or strong malodours soak overnight.
