The only thing our team at Royal Central is betting on? Amazing chapeaus! Here, a look at our favourite hats from Britain’s longest-reigning monarch. Kristin Contino, Chief Reporter The Queen’s hats are iconic. Picture her in your mind’s eye. She’s wearing a bold, bright hat, isn’t she? I love that her philosophy with regards to style isn’t to be a maven always on the latest trend before the rest of us catch up, it’s ‘I have to be seen to be believed.’ When I got to see The Queen in person in 2010, she was wearing a bright yellow hat that’s seared into my memory. And, as she philosophises, she did need to be seen from that great distance to be believed. While Genevieve was responsible for the designs, her husband Andrew was in charge of cutting and book-balancing. An old Singer sewing machine was used for stitching. Her Majesty lived her life to its full every day, recognising and respecting the privilege, importance and influence of her position, wielding it in the most dignified way. And as a female monarch, she offered continuous inspiration and hope to women of all ages, bringing integrity, grace, intellect and immeasurable value to society - all whilst privately balancing being a mother, a grandmother, a wife, a sister, a daughter, and a friend - every day her life. But over the years, royal aides let slip fascinating details about Her Majesty's most prized possessions:The Queen’s hat makers worked very closely with the dress makers, so much so that initially the dress maker would put his/her own label in the hat rather than the milliners! But, as the Head of State, she recognised that she had to move to always wearing British (unlike Princess Margaret who often frequented the likes of Dior). Despite this, most of her hat makers were foreign, but moved to London for their careers.

As children, the Queen and her sister dressed relatively informally, as demonstrated by the fact they didn't often wear hats – which was tradition at the time.Make a note of the places mentioned in the story and find them on a map. Could you plot the route that the Queen takes throughout the story? If you were to recreate the journey, how would you travel to each location? How long might each step take? Whether she was dazzling at a state dinner or meeting subjects during a royal engagement, the Queen's wardrobe was vibrant, timeless and always perfectly coordinated. He added that for the Queen's petite proportions, it was important she had a smaller bag because it wouldn't have looked right for her to wear a 'blooming great thing'. Stewart Parvin, who designed dresses for Her Majesty for over a decade, claimed that the shoes had to be immediately comfortable and that to achieve this, a member of staff with the same size feet would walk up and down palatial corridors for her until they were suitably broken in.
