So yes, this was a mixed bag for me. Lots of things I liked, quite a few bits I didn't like or couldn't fully appreciate. When reading "Warriors of God", I was quite surprised to see some developments - especially in the dynamics of some characters. Reynevan here, for instance, is more serious, mature and battered by life. And the dynamics within his group had changed, too, one of the indicators being others taking out crap on him so much more rarely than before. Perhaps one should not be surprising - afterall, Reynevan had survived two years among religious fanatics, many of them totally rabid about their beliefs. Even as I write this, I want to be a better warrior for the Lord. Maybe you feel the same way. The good news is the Lord is in the business of encouraging His children so they can fulfill the plans He has for them. Being a warrior for the Lord involves prayer.

The style is engaging and Reston does a good job fleshing out Richard as hot-tempered, generous and petty, along with his gift for tactics and his inspired leadership on the battlefield. Saladin comes off as mature and cool-tempered, Richard’s equal as a strategist if not as a warrior. The portraits of Eleanor of Aquitaine and King Philip are also vivid. The coverage of the battles is vivid (if somewhat short) The narrative is compelling, fast-paced and flows well. In line with this, the Bible says in Matthew 5:9, “Blessed are the peacemakers because they shall be called sons of God.” This particular Scripture is valid, but once we grasp what a fighter of God does, we recognize that these words do not negate that perspective. These helpful insights are not merely applicable to leading a Catholic faith or teaching people. Clearly, we were created by God for these purposes! Yet, in all these, we need to remember that the battle belongs to the Lord. We need to seekHim and His will first and foremost. He needs to be the one who chooses what battles we are to face and which weapons we are to use. The Lord is our admiral, our general, and choosing to follow His commands is the surest way to achieve victory! After all, God sees the whole picture, He has the maps, information, and vision to see us safely through any challenge…
