It soaked up all the water in our lab testing, leading to a perfect absorbency score. You can hang it up to dry using the attached hook loop, and we loved that it only took 1.5 hours to fully dry during our lab testing. Rather than the standard band, this towel features a stitched logo on either end (on one side only), which reminds us of a high-end hotel towel. We did notice, however, that the towel's on the small side when compared with other towels we've tested. This everyday towel gets plenty of usage drying hands after hand washing and is found close to the sink in a bathroom. It also makes for a great decorative accent in a bathroom, whether you choose to add a printed towel or a pop of colour. For this piece, I spent a year testing 13 of the most popular and highly reviewed bath towels. Before the testing process began, I consulted two experts, each of whom lent excellent insight into the world of towels. We discussed everything from construction to proper laundering and even touched on display considerations. These are characterized by a honeycomb pattern on the surface of the towel. You’ll most commonly see towels made from cotton, thanks to its impressive absorbency and softness. There are several types of cotton towels available, including Egyptian cotton, Turkish cotton, organic cotton, Supima cotton, and more. Egyptian and Turkish cotton towels are the most high-end types you can buy. They are both typically made from long-staple fibers, so they are super soft and absorbent—our softest bath towel, the Restoration Hardware Ultra-Soft Turkish Towel Set, is made from 100 percent long-staple Turkish cotton. Just note that Egyptian and Turkish cotton towels also often carry higher price points than towels made from other materials. As you shop for towels, it’s important to know towels are categorized by their construction. After following the care instructions, this towel has held up exceptionally well, too. We noted that it looked brand-new after three washes. Absorbency is another important consideration when purchasing towels, but this factor is often hard to discern when you’re shopping in-store or online. There’s no way to measure a towel’s absorbency without trying it, but you can look for a few indicators that a towel will soak up plenty of water. Almost all of the towels I tested were made of 100% cotton. This seems simple enough, but it’s actually quite a complex category. Descriptors like “Supima” and “long-staple” abounded, and I found myself curious about the origins of each type of cotton, too. Sean Cormier, chair of the textile development and marketing department at New York’s Fashion Institute of Technology, helped to break down these terms, noting that different species of cotton relate to staple (or fiber) length in different ways. This, in turn, relates to the length of a single fiber within a “boll” of cotton, or the little puffballs that grow on cotton plants. Cotton is broken down into three staple lengths: short staple (the most common type), long staple and extra-long staple. Generally speaking, longer-staple cotton yields a final product that’s softer and stronger. Most of the cotton grown in the United States is Upland cotton, and it’s great when used to make items such as jeans or flannels. But when it comes to sheets and towels, long-staple cotton (such as Turkish cotton) or extra-long-staple cotton (such as Pima, Supima or Egyptian cotton) are preferable. Riley Spa Bath Towel: While this is still a good option for those who prefer a thinner towel, it isn’t as soft as I expected for the price. It does offer some thoughtful details, though, like curved edges and a loop for hanging. Still, it felt more like a beach towel than the sort of towel you might like to wrap yourself up in and linger for a while.Fabric fibres are made into thread or yarn and then twisted together. The direction of the spin is called a twist. The lower the twist in a yard, the more plush, soft and absorbent the towel will be. A higher twist will create a tighter and stronger weave, which will result in a more durable towel. It’s important to strike the right balance between durability and softness so that your towels stay looking and feeling great for as long as possible. How many towels do I need? There are some key performance differences associated with various towel weights that are important to factor into your purchasing decision. For instance, products with a low GSM typically dry faster but aren’t as absorbent. An example of this is a lightweight beach towel. On the other hand, heavy towels with a high GSM are the most absorbent and plush, but as such, they will take longer to dry. After the absorbency test came the drying test. I hung each of the towels up in my bathroom on separate towel hooks and let them remain there for 15 hours, at which point I measured (by feel) how much moisture had evaporated from each, giving them a score of 1 through 10, with 10 being the driest and 1 the least dry.
