About this deal

And I returned the phones and got a second pair through my supplier, in case I had a faulty pair. No good - the touch controls were still too unreliable to use.

For the rest of us, the big selling point will be the battery life. Since the UW100 isn’t constantly expending energy on cancelling out sounds, its batteries last longer than any other earbud we tested. But because this is Technics, all that weight and momentum isn’t at the expense of the other frequency information, and it’s swift and well-controlled enough to prevent music from getting bogged down. This is a zippy, well-balanced presentation - with the additional benefit of the sort of implacable bass weight (and detail, and texture) that is more than capable of starting a one-person party. A water resistance rating of IPX5 means the product can withstand sustained, low-pressure water jets. If it has a water resistance rating of IPX6, the earbuds can resist heavy-pressure sprays of water. Once you get up to IPX7 water resistance, the earbuds can be submerged in up to one meter of water for up to 30 minutes. However, because water resistance doesn’t mean waterproof, it’s probably not a good idea to go swimming with your earbuds, even if they have a water resistance rating. Nevertheless, the noise-cancellation performance is the best we’ve tested. The QuietComfort Earbuds II make mincemeat of most sounds that dare come in their direction. While not every sound was removed, they earbuds weren’t far off from leaving us in total total silence. They’re better at suppressing people’s voices, and the new design does help reduce the impact of ambient noise. This is a resoundingly good performance. Battery life:Battery life is also key in choosing the best wireless earbuds. Wireless earbuds can last about 5 to 10 hours and offer extended playtime with their bundled charging cases — always make sure one is included.

What are wireless earbuds?

Wireless earbuds are great but, unlike wired headphones, you have to deal with the added irritant that is managing battery life. For some, this could be a dealbreaker – however, manufacturers are getting better in this department. Wireless earbuds are one of those ideas that sounded like a dream at first: Pop a little headphone into each ear and listen to music or take calls untethered from everything. The first wireless buds were gigantic, died after a few hours, and had a bunch of other problems. Times have changed. There are now tons of new models that sound fabulous and work perfectly. After testing hundreds over the past four years, these are our favorite wireless earbuds, in a wide range of styles and prices. The Bose app allows you to alter the amount of noise-cancelling on offer via a number of customisable presets and, speaking of noise-cancelling, the new Bose are still at the top of their game. They can automatically adjust the amount of ANC on offer so your music isn’t drowned out by particularly loud noises and the effect is deeply impressive. As for sound, it's balanced and neutral and overflowing with fine detail. Call quality is good for the money too. Comfort is subjective, but rest assured that our reviewers have worn the buds being tested for hours at a time and in all manner of situations, be that in a quiet room at home, running in the gym or on a busy commute. This ensures we’re able to give an informed opinion on how comfortable they are to wear, how secure the fit is and how well they withstand rain and sweat. Japanese headphone maestros Audio Technica are past masters at bringing electronics down to a reasonable price point without ditching too much in terms of audio quality, and they’ve continued down this road with this excellent pair of budget(ish) wireless in-ears, which ditch a few extras to come in at a much more affordable price point.

Sony's XM-series earbuds go from strength to strength with each new generation. As the latest flagship, the WF-1000XM5 wireless earbuds are smaller and lighter, yet they're equipped with some of the strongest features and performance we've ever seen from a pair of wireless earbuds. They have some of the most dynamic and engaging sound we've heard, and their noise-canceling performance easily matches that of the Bose QuietComfort Earbuds 2 or Apple AirPods Pro 2 Everything about the Earfun Air is enjoyably unpretentious. The charging case they come in looks and feels good, and the earbuds themselves are well made and easy to position comfortably. With seven hours of power in the ‘buds and another 28 hours in the case, the Air will keep you company for ages before they need a sniff of mains power. Their IPX7 rating means they’ll put up with quite a lot in terms of damp and dust, and Bluetooth 5.0 connectivity means they can handle hi-res audio files from Qobuz or Tidal with no problems. Sound from the Airpods Pro is lifelike and precise, although there are better headphones out there when it comes to delivering a nice warm bass sound. But Apple’s headphones still defiantly refuse to work with better Bluetooth codecs such as Apt-X, which means you lose out on some musical detail here. Everything from the noise cancellation (which is industrial strength) to taking calls is a delight. If you were looking for quibbles, they’re slightly bulkier than the others under test. It seems to be a Sony thing – their SRS-XG300 was one of the heaviest in my test of the best bluetooth speakers. But I found them perfectly fitted to my ears and more than capable of staying in there during a jog or rowing machine session. Weight: 5.5g | Battery life: 7.5 hours (buds), 20.5 hours (charging case) | Bluetooth: 5.0 | Waterproof: IP57 | Noise cancelling: Active | Mics: Four

What is active noise cancellation (ANC)?

A significant proportion of buds now favour the use of silicone tips, which seal off your ear canals and secure the buds in your ears far better. They also have the advantage of providing improved passive noise cancellation. Manufacturers typically provide a range of different-sized tips to help ensure you get the most comfortable and stable fit possible. Shokz are famous for having pioneered bone-conduction headphones where the sound travels through your cheekbone, leaving your ear completely open to the world. We consider their OpenRun Pro the safest headphones you can get for running. What you don’t get, however, is very much in the smarts department, with nothing in the way of ANC or transparency modes or even built-in microphones to take calls. The Bluetooth battery life is also rather limited at just eight hours of use, so they’re not the perfect all-rounders despite that high-end price tag. The Ultra provide a comfortable fit and lots of features. Bluetooth 5.3 is a big bonus, while they are also Bose's first in-ears to offer its very own spatial audio tech, Immersive Audio.
