About this deal

It seriously impressed us, writing: ‘from the first pedal stroke the Procaliber took the lead in this test and never faltered. We were instantly won over by its effortless turn of speed, in part thanks to the carbon wheels, but it’s also about the more forgiving ride quality of the frame. Bumps just didn’t chip away at our speed as much as they did on the other bikes on test. And even when we were out of the saddle, the Procaliber was still the smoothest bike here.’

Haibike was probably the first mainstream brand to start designing long travel e-bikes and equipping them with dual crown forks, but the spotlight really swivelled onto this category of bike with the introduction of the Specialized Kenevo. With coil-sprung suspension, heavy-duty tyres, four-piston brakes and masses of travel, it was part shuttle vehicle, part downhill bike.

We weren’t without quibbles when testing this bike, though. The air-sprung front fork doesn’t offer great small-bump sensitivity, and a fork upgrade isn’t viable at this price. It would be nice to see Boost spacing too. The steel BFe has long been a feature of the hardtail scene, with 26in, 650b and 29in wheel versions offered since 2005. This Voodoo Hoodoo bike brings together many of the great features that buyers expect from the brand, in a mid-range price point. The look of this bike is similar to the Bantu above. Despite the seat tube not being that steep, the long rear-end helps keeps your weight centred and makes climbing easier.

It also makes it easier to move around the bike, because there’s no horizontal head tube in your way, and improves seated comfort because more seatpost is exposed, which adds compliance. This means a light frame, good braking and plenty of gears to choose from. Others focus on the comfort on rougher terrain, with either quality front suspension or full suspension. The difference between the long and short settings is subtle, but we found the short setting preferable because it gives the bike a fun-loving personality. Overall, the Signal has a great chassis that wouldn’t look out of place on a much pricier bike, and there is a good level of kit for the money without too much compromise. Despite these points, you do get a lot of performance for the money and the Fury trumps its competitors in multiple ways. A better fork would just elevate this steal of a bike even further.
