About this deal

For your first completed contract in the game, your reward will be in the form of coins from the bank. For your second completed contract, you will get 1 victory point. And if you manage a third, you get a second victory point. You can never complete more than three contracts. So as much as this is a race to get in their first, one player cannot dominate all four available contracts. The person cards display various people who live and work around the harbor: sailors, admirals, priests, traders, and “mademoiselles”. These cards are available to be hired by players, and when hired will be placed in front of you for the remainder of the game (except in a few cases). An important part of the game are the colonial nations in the Caribbean ( Spain, France, England and The Netherlands) and their relationships. Explore the Caribbean sea and towns in the predecessor to the best open-ended buccaneer game of all time! In this one your goal is to become the Governor.

Now the other players may take a card, if able. Alex wishes to take 1 of the Ships that are left. He gives Andrea 1 coin for compensation, chooses 1 Ship, puts it onto the discard pile and takes the appropriate amount of coins. After the rest of the players also had a chance to take 1 card, the leftovers are discarded.

Leave a little space next to it for an open discard pile. Each player now starts with 3 coins that are dealt from the draw pile to each player as face down cards into their personal display, with only the golden coins showing. The aim is becoming Governor. To achieve this, trading and completing missions (finding the player character's captured mother and sister or a buried treasure) is required.

I bought this game and both the currently available expansions at the same time. Then, I immediately mixed them together so they fit in one box. So in this review, I will include all 3. Additionally, the amount of Swords they give you, must be equal to or higher than the Swords depicted on the Ship. If this is the case you may put the Ship into the discard pile instead of the harbor display - otherwise it cannot be repelled and has to go into the harbor display. If the drawn card is a Tax Increase, all players that currently own 12 or more golden coins lose half (rounded down) of their coins (i.e. with 12 or 13 coins the player loses 6 coins ). The cards are put onto the discard pile. Afterwards - depending on the Tax Increase drawn - either the player with the most Swords or the player with the least victory points gains 1 coin. In case of a tie (for example if no players have swords or victory points yet) all tied players gain 1 coin.A player can always stop voluntarily and proceed to the 2nd phase unless he draws a Ship that is of identical color to one that is already in the harbor dispay and that he cannot repel. When one player has at least twelve influence points — which are on both people and expedition cards — the game is played to the end of the round, giving everyone the same number of turns, then the player with the most influence points wins. To hire 1 Person, a player has to pay an amount of coins (put onto the discard pile) equal to the cost depicted on the bottom part of the Person he wishes to hire. He puts the Person into his personal display and may from now on use the ability on the top part of the card (the banner). All abilities are explained at the end of the rules. I think Port Royal will work well as both a family game and also as a filler game, on the far heavy side of the spectrum, for your gamer friends (if a 30 minute game can be considered a filler game). Give this one a look today though, it’s engaging game play and really low price point make it a win in my book.

Feature List

But after many plays, the depth of game play and the play time really pushes it more into the light-medium weight category for me. Which isn’t a big deal, but if you are going in thinking you have a filler game, you might be a bit disappointed. Port Royal ended up being a pretty fun and well designed card game. It’s easy to learn rules and overall light complexity help make its way to my gaming table quite often. I enjoyed how there are many ways to approach victory and how each player can stay invested in the game even when it’s not their turn.
