About this deal

During the 19th and early 20th centuries, St. John's water dogs were exported from Newfoundland to England. These dogs were crossbred with other dogs to create the retrievers. It was the ancestor of the modern retrievers, including the Flat-Coated Retriever, Curly-Coated Retriever, the Chesapeake Bay Retriever, the Golden Retriever, and the Labrador Retriever. The St. John's water dog was also an ancestor to the large and gentle Newfoundland, probably through breeding with Rafeiro do Alentejos brought to the island by the generations of Portuguese fishermen who had been fishing offshore since the 15th century. Dudley Labs are still purebred Labrador Retrievers. So are the other mentioned Labs in this article. White Labrador Retrievers also belong to the yellow color spectrum. They’re actually yellow Labradors that turned out to be paler due to specific breeding. They have the same personality strengths and physical attributes. These dogs will grow to about the same height and weight, and they will be intelligent and possess the same qualities as other Labradors without these white markings. How will I know if my Labrador with white markings is a purebred dog? Their coat is double-layered, soft, and appears shiny. Of course, all of this is achieved by a proper grooming routine and good nutrition.

The smaller short-coated St. Johns Dog (also known then as the Lesser Newfoundland) was used for retrieval and pulling in nets from the water. These smaller dogs were the forebears of the Labrador Retriever. The white chest, feet, chin, and muzzle - known as tuxedo markings - characteristic of the St. Johns Dog often appear in modern Lab mixes, and will occasionally manifest in Labradors as a small white spot on the chest (known as a medallion) or stray white hairs on the feet or muzzle. The Cream Labradoodle has a coat that is like an off-white, not quite the brilliant white of a white Labradoodle but not the deep rich gold of the Apricot Labradoodle. Well, now’s the perfect chance to get to know a thing or two about the rarest Labrador Retriever color combinations. 1. Merle Labrador. Around his face, nose, and ears, the color can be darker. The tips of the hair are also often lighter than the base, making him appear as if his coat has two tones. The 3 Rare Labradoodle Colors and Patterns White, Fox Red, and Dudley Labradors fall under the main yellow category. We’ll get to them soon, so stay tuned! 3. Chocolate Labrador.

Keep Calm

Now it’s time to show you some of the rarest Labrador colors and markings. These combinations are so rare that most of us have never even heard of or seen them. A Newfoundland outport fisherman with his young St. John's water dog, photographed 1971 in La Poile, Newfoundland When looking at Labradoodles, an F1 dog is a first-generation cross, meaning they are the direct descendant of Labrador Retriever and Poodle parents. These dogs have the most unpredictable coats. When breeders succeed in developing a merle Lab pup, it is considered as a really huge surprise. Imagine the excitement of seeing a merle pup! If these alleles are the same, the puppies will be homozygous. This means they inherited two copies of the same dominant allele.

Just like other rare colors, the dudley isn’t considered a good contestant for show rings. While it surely seems unfair, the kennel clubs have rules to follow when judging and rating purebred dogs. Because they’re so smart, yellow Labradors effortlessly pass every job interview, and they usually get hired as service dogs.

The Boxador should be very receptive to positive training techniques, being both intelligent and food motivated. Both parent breeds are known to be trainable. And, as we’ve already learnt, it’s important to train this breed well due to their large adult size. If your dog has the curly coat type of the Poodle breed for which Labradoodles are most well known, they will also need to be professionally groomed and cut every few months. The St. John's water dog first developed on the island of Newfoundland sometime between 1494-1790 as European fishing dogs were brought to the region. During its development, Newfoundland was being colonized by Europeans; while contested, Newfoundland was primarily a British colony until Canada was formed in 1867 and Newfoundland voted to join the country 1949. The dog went extinct in the 1980s. Gold Labradoodles are also called Apricot Labradoodles or Caramel Labradoodles. They are slightly darker than their cream counterparts.

Future paw parents will have to do lots of research before getting their new Lab pup. Take notes about this breed’s temperament, health issues, and nutritional and exercise needs. Well, not quite. It’s important to know that every dog has an intelligence and a personality of its own. Farrell, L. et al. ‘ The Challenges of Pedigree Dog Health: Approaches to Combating Inherited Disease’, Canine Genetics and Epidemiology (2015)The White Labradoodle is much lighter than the Cream Labradoodle but still not the brilliant white of an English Bulldog or Dalmatian. Both parent breeds are very active, and your Boxador will need at least an hour of exercise each day. The Boxer parent does tend to have a shorter muzzle that puts it right on the edge of brachycephaly, however.
