Invincible immortalises two of our greatest glories: the men’s invincible Premier League season of 2003/04 and the women’s Champions League winning team of 2006/07. If you asked a Premier League football fan “who are the best clubs in the league?”, they probably wouldn’t say “Arsenal” until they’ve gone through Liverpool, Chelsea, Spurs, both Manchester clubs, and maybe even Leicester City. The Gunners simply are not the driving force that they used to be on the pitch. However, this doesn’t take away from the size of their club by any means. In direct response to this articles headline, I found the atmosphere inside the ground yesterday to be excellent, especially given the clubs current standing and the millions of opinions as to why we are where we are. If you’re paying a lot of money to see the team you love, you want to give them the best chance of winning. Booing and jeering wouldn’t do that. However, it isn’t only local fans that Arsenal are striving to reconnect with. In July, the first team traveled to the United States for a preseason tour. For many supporters who are unable to be near the club on a regular basis, this presented a rare opportunity to watch their team in the flesh. It didn’t matter that none of Arsenal’s three matches Stateside were just friendlies. For two weeks, American fans in Baltimore and Orlando treated themselves to their own version of the matchday experience you would see in London. They enjoyed pints before and after matches. They sang their hearts out as Arsenal, the Arsenal, played in front of them. They left feeling closer to a club that sometimes feels so far away.
