Our picture describes action and events, with not the slightest shadow of Freud. The serious thing about Jules Verne is that all he does is tell a story in exciting episodes, but his stories have always pushed man a little closer towards the unknown. What we've tried to do is retell his story in the best way of all - in the Verne vernacular. [4] Scheuer, Philip K. (17 June 1959). "Mason to Replace Webb in Fantasy: Actor in 'Center of Earth;' Book Reveals 'True' Ingrid". Los Angeles Times. p.A11. Of course, if his uncle dashes off to Iceland and becomes incinerated in the fiery hells of the Earth, it will hardly endear himself to the young lady.

However, this book considerably deviated from Mysterious Island in one major way, namely the ending. For some reason, it felt like the author had rushed the ending somewhere after the mid point of the book. Had it all been fast-paced, it might've been okay, but considering how detailed oriented and slow the pace was in first part of the journey, the ending didn't feel harmonious with the rest. Nevertheless, I'm glad it was a happy ending. An animated television series, Journey to the Center of the Earth, first broadcast in 1967 on ABC, starring the voices of Ted Knight, Pat Harrington, Jr., and Jane Webb; loosely based on Verne's novel and closer to the 1959 film. [4] Roger Ebert of the Chicago Sun-Times gave the film 2 stars out of 4, and wrote: "This is a fairly bad movie, and yet at the same time maybe about as good as it could be. There may not be an 8-year-old alive who would not love it." [17] Peter Travers of Rolling Stone gave it 2.5 out of 4, but warned "Remove a star from the rating if you take this Journey without wearing 3-D glasses. That’s where the real fun comes in." [18] Owen Glieberman of Entertainment Weekly gave it a B- and said "Journey is just the new version of a 1950s comin'-at-ya roller coaster, with a tape measure, trilobite antennae, and giant snapping piranha thrust at the audience." [19] Box office [ edit ] Alien Voices, an audio theater group led by Leonard Nimoy and John de Lancie, released a dramatized version of Journey to the Center of the Earth through Simon and Schuster Audio in 1997. From that hour we had no further occasion for the exercise of reason, or judgment, or skill, or contrivance. We were henceforth to be hurled along, the playthings of the fierce elements of the deep.

In June and July, the sun doesn't set in Iceland. They came to a peasant's house, the peasant and his wife had nineteen children. The next day they kept going. The ground became muddy and it was hard to walk. They even encountered a leper. Leprosy was a common disease there. On June 19th they walked on volcanic soil and on June 20th they came to Budir, on the shore. There they were greeted and welcomed by Hans's family. The next day they ended up in a small village of thirty little houses. Among Verne's sources and influences for the Journey were Dante’s Inferno, Icelandic legends, Chateaubriand, Baudelaire, Virgil, E.T.A. Hoffmann, Edgar Allan Poe, Alexandre Dumas, and Georges Sand. Some scholars have pointed to disturbing textual similarities with Sands’ “Laura: Voyage dans le cristal” (Jan. 1864); Verne was also accused of plagiarism by a writer named Leon Delmas, who had written “La Tete de Mimers” under a pseudonym in September 1863 (though Verne won the suit). Beyond relying on these varied literary influences, Verne consulted many scientific texts for this novel as well. After finishing his law studies in Paris, Jules decided to dedicate himself to literature. At eleven years of age, he boarded a ship to India but his father stopped him. The love for the sea kept on living in him.

Rather than having a storyline more driven by plot and a character's reactions and observations. In other words, this "long-windedness" that people are criticizing is more of a self-deflecting mechanism of their inability to accept and/or comprehend this style of writing. The two are truly different from each other, but in the course of the book we will learn to love them both, and we will see them put together their differences to face the challenges they will encounter on the journey.
