It was a bold move for Nike to transform their last textbook stability trainer into a supportive, neutral trainer. Nike’s research must have indicated that the number of runners wanting a supportive, neutral trainer outweighed the number of runners wanting a “true” stability trainer.

I assumed that the shoe would soften and return more energy as it broke in. However, this was not something I noticed, and instead the double digit runs I did in these left my feet and legs feeling more tired. However, the upper is a disappointment because the other elements of this shoe made the flywire ineffective. The Structure 23 is the Structure series reimagined and I really like the direction that Nike has gone with it.

The easiest way to tell the difference between the Structure 23 and 24 is the engineered mesh used. It no longer has small perforations on the midfoot and on top of the toe box. Instead, the mesh is smooth so it feels more streamlined. There’s also a small Zoom Air unit in the forefoot of the Structure 24 which is only situated under the ball of the foot and doesn’t cover the entire forefoot like in the Vomero 16 and the Pegasus 38. My first run was 15 kilometres at an easy pace. The first thing that surprised me was how much cushion the midsole had. The Structure 23 is Nike’s version of the Ultra Boost ST: high levels of cushioning with a built up medial side.

Partial bootie wraps the foot for a snug, comfortable fit. Notches at the tongue provide easy on and off. The Nike Structure has never been a soft shoe. It was the firm midsole that gave it its highly stable ride. The ride of the Zoom Structures is comparable in stability and cushion to an Asics 2000 or the aforementioned Brooks Ravenna. When I slipped them on for the first time I was surprised by how firm they felt. The upper – recently updated on this model – felt plush with plenty of room for my foot to move.The next three versions toned down the medial post, making them more comfortable and this broadened the target market. The firm ride still remained. It has only been launched in a very small number of markets in Asia and Nike has chosen to not name the foam that its midsole is made of or give its standard size weight.

This was an effective change as I noticed how my feet were landing on my stride. The wider than average toebox gives you ample room to spread out. So if the Structure 23 is so different to the Structure 22, why did Nike not just give it a new name? Doesn’t the Structure name conjure images of a firm and stiff ride? Imagine if ASICS removed the firm medial post from the Kayano and gave it a single-density midsole. That’s exactly what they did with the Kayano Lite but at least they still kept the regular Kayano for runners who still want traditional stability. When I tested the Structure 23 last year, I was astonished how different it was to previous Structures which were firm and stiff. The 23 felt much more cushioned and much more flexible; I liked the new direction that the Structure had gone in. It was a Nike classic, reimagined.

If one was asked to describe how the Nike Structures of days gone by felt, the adjectives would be along the lines of firm, stiff and stable. After the Invincible Run, the Structure 24 is the next softest trainer in the Nike performance range. If you find the Invincible Run too unstable, expensive or fragile, the Structure 24 is a great alternative.

The result is a more consistent ride than the Pegasus and Vomero because CMP 010 foam surrounds the airbag in the forefoot whereas the forefoot of the Pegasus/Vomero feels much firmer than the rearfoot so the ride feels inconsistent. During walking and running this acts as cushioning for the body. The Structure 24 definitely isn’t as stable as the Structure 22 and Structures before the 22 because of how much softer its midsole is but it’s still an incredibly stable ride and one of the most stable neutral shoes you can buy.

The structure uses a multi-thread that gives grip but still lets you rip. The treads don’t have aggressive lugs that get in the way of the road.
