About this deal

Moving on, the Cyber-shot RX10 II’s mode dial offers the usual PASM modes, Auto, SCN, Sweep Panorama, Movie, Memory Recall and HFR, for the High Frame Rate modes. The addition of HFR is the major difference in mode options between the Mark I and Mark II, the former using the dial position instead for an additional Memory Recall mode. As before, you can start filming in any relevant mode by simply pressing the red record button, but by first putting the camera into the Movie mode, it’ll preview the composition frame. As with their Alpha a7 series, RX100 series and almost any other camera range, really, Sony are in the habit of keeping the preceding camera in the lineup in production rather than immediately killing it off when the new version comes out, as other camera manufacturers tend to do.

The same could be said when comparing the Sony RX10 IV with its predecessors, the RX10 III and RX10 II, however there are certainly some obvious differences between the three cameras that make them distinct from each other.Again, the nearest rivals for the Sony RX10 IV’s feature set and performance are its similarly specified predecessors, with the Sony RX10 III being the closest by virtue of it also featuring a 25x optical zoom, which was the biggest step up from the 8.3x optical zoom RX10 and RX10 II models, with the series originating in 2013. And there’s now another plus to the Sony way of doing things. In a welcome update, the RX10 II can now shoot when connected to an external USB power source. Powering-up earlier models would temporarily ignore any connected power sources, but now you can use them to keep shooting when your battery is low – great for extended filming or timelapse shooting. This capability was one of the hidden upgrades in the Mark II Alpha A7 series and I’m very glad to see it here as well on the RX100 IV. However, it's on the inside where all the changes have been made between the RX10 II to the III to the IV. Image Quality The Sony RX10is one of my favourite cameras of recent years, and a triumph of substance over marketing spin. Its headline specs weren’t particularly attention-grabbing, but the combination of a generously proportioned 1in sensor and a 24-200mm zoom lens with a constant f/2.8 aperture was an inspired choice for high image quality in a wide range of shooting conditions. The handsome magnesium alloy body, elegant controls, fast performance and superb video features all contributed to an extremely impressive camera. The RX10 II's LCD is tilting, rather than vari-angle, but this does at least make it easier to shoot from low down. And, as in other high-end Sony cameras, it's not a touchscreen.

This puts the RX10 IV in a class above its predecessors, the RX10 III and RX10 II, with faster and more accurate autofocus than anything that came before it. The 315 point Phase Detection autofocus system in the Mark IV covers approximately 65% of the entire image area of the image sensor, offering widespread and dense coverage of AF points. Focal Range There are more programmable function buttons on the rear. Fn8 is all the way by its lonesome at the top left corner—by default it switches between the EVF and LCD. There's also an Eye Sensor function for automatic switching.

This is now joined by a new C2 button at the bottom of the rear panel below the control dial. That’s to compensate for the loss of one of the custom positions on the mode dial to make way for the new HFR video modes.
