About this deal

We recently compared the new AMD Ryzen 7 5800X3D and Intel Core i9-12900K flagship head to head in 40 games and found that overall they offer a similar gaming experience. Of course, they traded blows, Cyberpunk 2077 isn't kind to AMD although over 100 fps is plenty for playing this game, and given it's not a competitive title you don't need hundreds of frames per second. The 5800X3D gains are pretty tame compared to other games, just a 15% boost, and DDR4-3800 didn't help further performance. Based on testing by AMD as of 12/14/2021. Performance evaluated with Final Fantasy XIV. All games tested at 1920x1080p resolution with the HIGH in-game quality preset (or equivalent). System configuration: Ryzen 7 5800X and ASUS ROG Crosshair VIII Hero with 2x8GB DDR4-3600 versus a Core i7-12700K and ROG Maximus Z690 Hero motherboard with BIOS 0702 and 2x16GB DDR5-5200. Both systems configured with GeForce RTX 3080 on driver 472.12, 1TB SSD, NZXT Kraken X62, Windows 11. R5K-118

Again a familiar situation with less CPU-intensive games; there’s not much of a difference of note between Ryzen 7 7700X and Ryzen 7 5800X3D here. Shadow of the Tomb Raider Shadow of The Tomb Raider For the memory we've installed four DDR4-3200 modules into each board, resulting in a dual-rank, dual-channel CL14 configuration and a Radeon RX 6900 XT was used with SAM enabled. Benchmarks Interestingly, the single core performance has dropped by 12% according to the Cinebench R23 results when compared to what we see with the 5800X. That's a large reduction which typically wouldn't bode well for gaming performance, but we'll look at that shortly. Based on our evaluation of using AMD's Ryzen 7 5800X3D CPU for professional tools, you can expect excellent tool performance with a high-performance CPU cooler. Next we have Hitman 3 and in this game at 1080p we see that the 7600X is 10% faster using the higher frequency DDR5 memory. Then with the 13600K we only saw a 2.5% increase from CL16 to CL14, while DDR5 increased performance over CL14 DDR4 by 8%.Video editors, 2D and 3D graphics tools, software compilers, and engineering tools require high-performing CPUs. The Riftbreaker is a CPU demanding game that's particularly sensitive to cache performance. As a result, the 5800X3D was up to 106% faster than the 3600, seen when comparing 1% low data at 1080p with the 6950 XT. The default memory configuration was DDR4-3200 CL14 dual-rank, but we've also included some configurations using G.Skill's DDR4-4000 CL16 memory set to 3800 CL16, as the highest FCLK our 5800X3D sample can handle without memory errors is 1900MHz and this is the norm for all quality Zen 3 chips. For Intel processors we've also added a DDR5-6400 CL32 memory configuration. Both platforms were tested with ReSizable BAR enabled and Windows 11. Let's now get into it. Application Benchmarks The Ryzen 7 7700X takes a huge lead in CS:GO over the Ryzen 7 5800X3D. Mean FPS Across Tested Games (minus CS:GO) / Conclusion Average Across 9 Games If the purpose is only productivity tasks, then the 7700X is the way to go, and the extra costs are worth it. DDR5 also provides major boosts in a few workloads, and you might be benefitted from them depending on your particular tasks.

We know that selecting the right memory for your PC can be overwhelming, with various factors to consider. When it comes to the AMD Ryzen 7 5800X3D processor, choosing a compatible memory type that can handle its demands is crucial for optimal performance and reliability. As computer hardware experts, we've evaluated the available RAM options, considering key factors such as speed, capacity, compatibility, and price. Based on our analysis, we'll provide recommendations and weigh the pros and cons of each option to assist you in making an informed decision. For testing we're using the 5800X3D, though the results will be transferable for all Ryzen 5000 series processors, so if there's no performance difference between B350 and X570, for example, with the 5800X3D, the same will also be true for the Ryzen 5 5600.

The Ryzen 7 5800X3D is AMD’s answer to the powerful Intel 12-gen core i9. With this amazing processor, AMD has increased the L3 cache on its system and capped the gaming performance to lovely levels. But with great power comes great responsibility, and you’ll not only need a good GPU but a valiant motherboard to allow this chip to enhance your gaming levels.

Here, AMD is using TSMC’s 5nm nodes as AMD continues its push on the roadmap to Zen 5, which will presumably be based on a 4nm process. With this, AMD’s Ryzen 7000 series also became the first lineup of desktop CPUs to use a 5nm node. Paired with this is the 6nm processing node for the I/O, which also contains the integrated GPU. Ryzen 7000’s boost in single-threaded performance over Ryzen 5000 (Courtesy: AMD) Increasing the resolution to 1440p once again doesn't change the results all that much, we're still primarily CPU limited here for most configurations, so the data is very similar to what was just seen at 1080p. On to the main topic, how do these two CPUs with comparable (launch) prices and somewhat comparable specifications differ in performance? We take a look at their gaming and productivity performance across a variety of games and software. Let’s take a look at our test benches: Ryzen 7 5800X3D Based on our evaluation of using AMD's Ryzen 5 5600X CPU for general apps, you can expect good app performance with a high-performance CPU cooler. Previously we found that the 13600K's cost per frame was 11% higher using DDR5-6400 over DDR4-3600 CL16, and at 4K that margin grows to 19% making the DDR4 memory considerably better value, and that margin can only grow as large as 21%.

It's also interesting to note that although the 5600 and 5800X3D are much closer when it comes to average frame rate performance, the 3D V-Cache model still boosted 1% lows by a massive 55% margin. Forza Horizon 5, like Dying Light 2, isn't a CPU intensive game, but unlike Far Cry it doesn't need to be. The Ryzen 5 3600 is very capable here, driving over 200 fps with the 6950 XT at both 1080p and 1440p. On average at 1080p, the 5800X3D is ~9% faster than the 12900K, which costs 30% more, and ~7% faster than the Core i9-12900KS, which costs a whopping 64% more. That means the Ryzen 7 58000X3D is now both the fastest gaming chip in our test suite and a better value for gaming specifically than the Core i9 models. Precision Boost Overdrive requires a compatible AMD Ryzen Threadripper, 3rd Gen AMD Ryzen processor, or Ryzen 5000 Series processor and a motherboard compatible with one or more of these processors. 2nd Gen AMD Ryzen processors including the Ryzen 3200G processor are not compatible with Precision Boost Overdrive. Because Precision Boost Overdrive enables operation of the processor outside of specifications and in excess of factory settings, use of the feature invalidates the AMD product warranty and may also void warranties offered by the system manufacturer or retailer. GD-135.

Unlike the gaming benchmarks, the productivity benchmarks show that the Ryzen 7 7700X has a massive advantage. It’s easy to conclude that the Ryzen 7 7700X is the superior CPU by a margin for productivity tasks. Temperatures In Hitman 3 we see that performance at 1080p and 1440p is largely CPU limited and the 7600X delivered the best results. However, by the time we reach 4K, the results have become GPU limited and now all CPUs are capped at the same frame rate. Finally, here's a look at the 12 game average across the three resolutions tested and as you can see overall performance ends up much the same for the fastest memory configurations tested for each of these CPUs. Update: In the meantime, I replaced this Ryzen 7 5800X3D + RTX 3090 rig with the new-gen hardware, with a Ryzen 7 7800X3D, RTX 4090, plus a new motherboard and DDR5 memory. Needless to say, I’m keeping mine and am very happy with it. It runs a little hotter than my 5600x, but all I had to do was adjust my fan curve a little on my water cooler. So it’s a little noisier, but I can live with that. As we've seen so far, the 1080p and 1440p data is similar when using the RTX 4090 as we're almost always CPU bound with an ultra fast GPU. If you’re looking to maximize the power of your Ryzen 7 5800X3D processor, then you need to find the best motherboard to get it running at peak performance. But with so many motherboards on the market, which one should you choose? Here are some key features and considerations when selecting a motherboard for your Ryzen 7 5800X3D. Of course, the Ryzen 7 5800X3D is a huge win if you already own a Ryzen system — this chip will drop into almost any AM4 motherboard, saving some cash if you have the right supporting components. Overall, the Ryzen 7 5800X3D is exactly what AMD says it is — a chip optimized specifically for gaming that takes the overall lead.
