About this deal

He wrote an adaptation of Pinocchio featuring the songs and score from the Walt Disney film for the National Theatre, opening in December 2017. [ citation needed] Mark and Jan are responsible for the events surrounding the bullying of Adam that lead to him falling into the grille. From p20 – 23 we are given a detailed description of the events that take place. Mark and Jan appear to be trying to justify their actions in this scene, What these notes do is to get students to adopt the skins and the psyche of the characters and to feel the fear as the shifts in power unfold. They amplify what it is to be fully human in it’s good, bad and ugly forms and they get our full attention. They also tune students into how Kelly destabilises language.

I sometimes think I wonder, what would you do If I killedmyself right here in front of you? Like, what do you do?! What do you do, Phil?!

Everyone else stays calm, keep your mouth shut. Tell no one or we'll all go to prison. Just get on with things. He gets us to frame an innocent person, gets someone to identify the body and kill Adam when he turns up alive. From very early on in the play, Cathy is shown to have no remorse about the groups’ actions. She finds the situation ‘exciting’ and ‘better than ordinary life’ (p16). Her excitement grows when she is asked by the TV for an interview. She shows no concern for Adam and the real reason why the cameras are at the TV station and instead focuses on her own gain: " They might even give me money for it, do you think I should ask for money?" (p36). But as the lies begin to escalate the group goes with it. And allow the man to be framed and it appears to work until.' The play is now used widely in schools and is on several curriculums for GCSE drama. [ citation needed]

He wrote After the End in 2005. It was produced by Paines Plough in his first out of London production at the Traverse, though it later came to the Bush Theatre before going on a tour of the UK and internationally in 2006. [ citation needed] Cathy appears to have a callous side when she obtains DNA evidence from an actual postman who fits the description Phil made up. Did she do this because she is a social climber who is trying to impress the leader, or did she genuinely not realise what she has done? (p38) Raphael, Amy (16 May 2009). "There's no moral centre to Pulling because we don't have one!". The Guardian. London. They all think that he’s dead, and go about making a plan to hide what they’ve done. Their plan goes slightly wrong when they frame an innocent postman for ‘kidnapping’ Adam. Brian, a member of their group, refuses to go to the police station and confirm that he saw the man alone with Adam. However, he ends up going because Phil threatens to throw him down the grate to ‘rot together’ with Adam. Lou has no complicated speeches but instead speaks using simple sentences or short phrases. Phrases such as ‘We’re screwed’ (p34) make her appear young/ not assertive and relies on being given instruction. She also appears to believe the lies the group have created (p35)Tune, Cathy (2 March 2022). "Girls & Boys: When Families Fall Apart ~ Adelaide Festival 2022 Review".
