Floriane is her own woman, without much of the foolishness that (sadly) is always present in YA leads. She is skillfull and strong-willed, and she goes through her coming-of-age journey graceful and wonderfully. Ruvan was also great. His moodiness and power and determination to save his people was enchanting—not to speak of his looks. I enjoyed the chemistry between them! It wasn't too slow-burn. It was more like a fire building up until the flames are so bright you can't see anything else—and you won't want to. The rest of the characters were the perfect accompanying cast, making the plot more complex and entertaining. Also, don’t expect anything new in this book. While it was interesting, and the plot was better than in the previous book, the basics remain the same: a human girl taken to Midscape by a handsome magical male that she ends up falling in love with, and he ends up falling in love with her too, even though it goes against their norms and what is “usually done” in their society. The second is that the vampire have only one true weakness – silver. All other tools are merely meant to slow them. Or give their victims clean deaths.I really didn’t vibe with the romance between Floriane and Ruvan - I did at first, but I just wasn’t feeling it whatsoever throughout. I didn’t really care for it and I wished Kova had developed Ruvan a little more so I would’ve cared more.
