For those who are also looking for a low-commitment solution to covering their first greys, the new Defy Grey range is a hassle-free way of helping to blend away whites on brunette hair with less than 50% grey. The clever combination of coffee extract and GreyBlend technology works by depositing a natural-looking brown tone on the pigment-less strands of hair, which then blends with your own shade from the first use.

Both my parents, despite being dark-haired we never really that grey. Neither of them ever used hair dye and still only had a few greys. Their deaths certainly gave me a few of my own, but I’m still at that stage where I can pull out the odd one and get away with it. If you do have the first signs of grey or would like to prolonge your dye job I would definitely recommend this range and am glad that I got the chance to try it. I do think this will be great to prolong my dyed hair for a few more weeks in-between dyings and I will continue to use it . It does leave my hair looking healthier and more manageable.I would say before starting the trial I had let my hair go a little longer so hadn’t dyed for about 8 weeks. There was a clear definition as to where my hair had grown out and the Grey’s were pretty rife 😅 Needless to say this trial couldn’t have came at a better time. So let me tell you how I got on… All I can say is that it has been an unmitigated disaster. The hair that was white has all gone really bright yellow. I have washed it what feels like a thousand times in Head and Shoulders but nothing has happened apart from the yellow looks like it gets brighter to me. Apply liberally throughout wet hair. Lather. Leave on at least 3-5 minutes for the first use. Leave on up to 3 minutes for each subsequent use. Rinse well. To tame and blend away wiry greys, follow with Defy Grey Conditioner. For optimal grey blending results, finish with Defy Grey Foam.

Both the shampoo and conditioner smell amazing to use. Not too dissimilar to a premium fragrance, the divine scent creates a luxurious experience from what could be a mundane task. The silky texture of the chestnut shade shampoo feels lovely too and it lathers into a rich foam easily, and even though the product is coloured, it doesn’t leave a mark on my hands. Hair is left soft and manageable. If, like me you are trying to hold off dying your hair for now, give this a whirl. We all have goals in life don’t we. One of my more trivial goals was to get to 40 without dying my hair. I made it, and I was thrilled about that, but I still didn’t really want to get into that routine of having to dye my hair. This John Frieda Defy Grey Brunette Blending Shampoo gradually blends away first greys into brunette tones. With Coffee Extract & GreyBlend™ Technology. I don’t wash my hair all that much – once a week, or twice if I’m particularly enthusiastic about my self care. So over the following month (and several washes) my regular hair care was replaced by the Defy Grey.

A friend uses a kind of colour felt tip thingy to colour in greys but a) that sounds a lot of faff to do daily and b) I don’t know if it would really be doable on hairs that are white all the way along the strand. Hers are greying from the temples so easier I think to daub a pen thingy over little sections in that scenario but not sure it would work for me. I can’t really comment on these products individually about the effects as I did use them in combination with each other so will give my opinion at the end of this review.I have tried calling John Frieda who have sworn up and down it doesn't dye the hair and will wash out eventually and they have also sent me out some Violet Crush shampoo to try and tone the yellow down and that has done nothing either. I’ve been dyeing my hair – mainly to keep on top of my greys – for more years than I can remember. I was somewhere in my late teens when hair colouring was done for fun and feeling ‘grown up’ rather than necessity. But recently I grew tired of the upkeep in maintaining a look of youthfulness and perfection I was far from feeling, so I gave up on the dye.
