About this deal

It's an expensive gadget by anyone's standards, but if you're looking for a simple solution to log and monitor your local environment - both inside and outside - it could be the ideal addition to your home. Compact, cylindrical and elegantly designed with an aluminium casing (recyclable material), the Netatmo Smart Home Weather Station comprises two modules: one for outside, and one for inside. They measure the temperature, atmospheric pressure, humidity, air quality and noise pollution levels. The Netatmo Weather Station transfers the data via Wi-Fi to its dedicated app. The Tempest ( Rating: 6/10) is a recent entry to the scene, and like Netatmo it aims to give you a lot of information with a limited footprint. Though the hardware is larger than Netatmo’s, it’s more discreet than AcuRite and Ambient’s, looking a bit like a bird feeder and intended to be mounted on a pole (not included) somewhere in your yard or on your roof. The system also requires an indoor module that relays data from the sensor to your Wi-Fi network, but that module doesn’t provide any indoor climate information. Setup is fairly painless, at least in comparison to most other weather stations on the market. It's really hard to find any fault with the Netatmo Smart Carbon Monoxide Alarm. I guess the price is enough to put some people off, especially when you consider some households might need more than one.

By protecting the Weather Station’s Outdoor Module from bad weather, the shield can improve the accuracy of its readings. It’s easy to install along a wall or post with the accessories provided and protects the Outdoor Module from direct sunlight, rain and snow while allowing air to circulate around it. This extra data will be extremely useful in forecasting and monitoring localised extreme weather events such as heavy snow and rain. WOW has been developed by the Met Office in partnership with the Royal Meteorological Society and the Department for Education. Consistency of measurements is vital across the network, both for informing our forecasts and for the long-term weather and climate records of the UK. The modified hamburger button on the top-left gives users access to more in-depth meteorological data and I thoroughly enjoyed the Netatmo Weathermap feature. This allows you to take a look at Netatmo weather station readings in your area and around the globe. Together, these individual stations create a very cool, global patchwork of localized data. It’s easy enough to load line graphs illustrating long-term changes in humidity, temperature, noise, etc. and zoom-in on specific moments down to the minute. Truth be told, it does feel a little constricted zooming in and out of a line graph on a smartphone to take a closer look at granular data and toggling through to compare separate graphs. The Outdoor Module of the Netatmo Smart Home Weather Station is durable and moisture resistant. However, to maximise its lifespan and ensure more accurate readings, it’s recommended not to place it in direct sunlight or expose it to particularly bad weather. Depending on where the Outdoor Module user lives or the garden/balcony layout, it can be challenging to find an appropriate place to install the Module. This is no longer a problem with the Shield. Whether it’s sunny, wet or windy, the Outdoor Module measures the temperature accurately. The Weather StationThe smartness doesn't stop there though. The Netatmo's battery is stated to last around 10 years - that's pretty standard, but an additional feature this little device boasts is a self-testing facility. If there's a problem, it'll let you know.

The included Netatmo Personal Weather Station also leaves the door open for plenty of aftermarket accessorization such as pairing the Netatmo Smart Rain Gauge and Smart Anemometer. The Netatmo weather station also works with the Apple HomeKit for those looking to add to their connected smart home. Tempest provides quite a bit of information, including temperature, humidity, barometric pressure, wind speed/direction, lighting strike info, and UV data. The system also measures rain activity, but it does so without a traditional rain-catching funnel. Instead, Tempest uses a haptic rain sensor, essentially measuring when and how forcefully water droplets hit the top of the device. It’s surprisingly accurate and a lot less messy than the typical rain sensor—and it doesn’t have to be cleaned periodically. Update, July 7, 2021: This article was changed to reflect some recent improvements to the way data is presented in the Tempest app. As long as you have an internet connection, you can use the web or mobile app to monitor all of your weather station's readings anytime, anywhere. Overall, we found it to be well-presented and easy to navigate. All Met Office UK weather observations are subject to an internationally-agreed rigorous quality-control process. For new official records, we undertake further careful investigation to ensure that the measurement taken is robust, reliable, is feasible in the meteorological set-up and adheres to international World Meteorological Organisation standards. This is why you’ll often see observations records labelled ‘provisionally broken’ before the full verification has taken place, and for official confirmation of the record to be announced a few weeks later. The rising and falling of the barometric pressure links up to a very reliable forecasting system, and the air quality - measuring things like humidity and CO2 levels - can send alerts if the system detects high levels, giving you a reminder to open a window, for example. Britain is undoubtedly a nation obsessed with the weather. Whether it's the wind, rain, hail or whatever else our dynamic climate may throw at us, it's always a reliable conversation starter.

Firstly, it links to your home's WiFi. There's no hub, just a very easy connection process on a smartphone app. This means, straight away, you can be alerted to any presence of Carbon Monoxide with an instant notification. I thoroughly enjoyed the Netatmo Weathermap feature, which allows you to take a look at Netatmo weather station readings in your area and around the globe. Price: Hard to justify the high price Linking it up to WiFi - usually the complicated bit - happened instantly, and it now just sits a few feet from my boiler cupboard, ready to let me know if I'm in any danger. The Netatmo Weather Station may not satisfy the most serious weather enthusiasts, and it will likely be a step too far for others. However, its key strength is its ability to collate all your current and historical data into one intuitive app that you can access anytime and anywhere. You'll be prompted to register a free Netatmo account before getting started. From there, it's a case of plugging the indoor unit into the mains and following the app's on-screen instructions to get it connected to the wi-fi. The indoor unit acts as the 'base' station and communicates wirelessly with the outdoor sensor, which is battery-powered. The indoor air quality readings allow the user to take action and improve their well-being with simple steps, such as opening the windows when the CO2 levels are too high. The temperature, humidity and noise levels in the home are also provided in real-time. These weather stations measure a large variety of different meteorological parameters, including air temperature; atmospheric pressure; rainfall; wind speed and direction, humidity; cloud height and visibility. The Netatmo app, available for free on the App Store, Google Play and Windows Store, allows users to access this information at any time with their smartphone, tablet or computer. The Netatmo app interface is specially designed to be simple, clear and intuitive for daily use. There's lots of weather stations on the market, if you know where to look, but Netatmo's Smart Weather Station does it differently. It takes out the complications, makes everything really simple and easy to understand, and it's just so elegant and robust.
