Si tratta di una delle formazioni metereologiche più pericolose: può estendersi per diverse migliaia di metri in altezza, espellendo pezzi di ghiaccio e con venti che arrivano fino a 200 km/h, il tutto accompagnato da fulmini e forti rovesci. La loro forza è tale che anche i grandi aeroplani fanno il possibile per evitarli, gli elicotteri si lanciano all’immediata ricerca di una radura nella giungla in cui atterrare e le imbarcazioni si affrettano a trovare riparo dalla pioggia accecante. In rare occasioni, la più recente delle quali nel 2005, la tempesta può essere così devastante da abbattere centinaia di migliaia di alberi. This talk took place earlier this year as part of Photo London’s Book Club live events, to coincide with the UK launch of Salgado’s ‘Amazônia’ book published by TASCHEN.

Un’area montuosa protetta dalla bellezza straordinaria è il Parque Estadual Serra do Aracá. Of the many reasons one should spend some time visiting Magnum Opus, perhaps the most pertinent is that these photographs inspire feelings that we do not get enough of. Looking at Salgado’s work, one feels a sense of connection with the people and animals inhabiting the world around us, as well as thankfulness for the splendor that exists all over the Earth.

The Science Museum is open Wednesday – Sunday from 10.00 until 18.00. During school holidays the museum is open seven days a week.With over 200 photographs the exhibition revolves around two themes: images of landscape settings, and of indigenous peoples. Salgado’s Landscape Photographs Aerial Views – the exhibition provides visitors with a look at sweeping aerial shots of immense waterfalls and stormy skies. La mostra, in anteprima in Italia, con più di 200 opere ci immerge nell’universo della foresta mettendo insieme le impressionanti fotografie di Salgado con i suoni concreti della foresta. Il fruscio degli alberi, le grida degli animali, il canto degli uccelli o il fragore delle acque che scendono dalla cima delle montagne, raccolti in loco, compongono un paesaggio sonoro, creato da Jean-Michel Jarre.

The problems of Amazônia are well known and urgent: fires, deforestation, intrusive agriculture, roadbuilding. But Salgado – who with his wife, Lélia, has turned the family farm in Aimorés into a nature reserve that’s a model of reforestation – shows there is still much to fight for. The modern world, for all its rapacity, has only destroyed “a little bit of the periphery. The heart is there yet. To show this pristine place, I photograph Amazônia alive, not the dead Amazônia.”

Anavilhanas – Islands in the Stream, the archipelago between 350 and 450 islands of every ilmaginable shape emerging from the dark waters of the Rio Negro. Photographs Dedicated to Indigenous Populations Instituto Terra was founded by the Salgados in 1998 on degraded land previously farmed by the family. Over twenty years, they have slowly regrown part of the Atlantic Forest. Visitors will see photographs documenting the reforesting they have achieved and hear from staff at the Instituto about their work. T he Instituto now provides a home for endangered species, raises millions of tree seedlings in its nursery every year, and trains young ecologists to help protect the region’s biodiversity for generations to come. L’unico modo per poter cogliere le reali dimensioni della foresta è osservandola dallo spazio. Occupa un terzo del continente sudamericano, un’area più estesa dell’intera Unione Europea, è attraversata dal Rio delle Amazzoni che, con i suoi circa 1.100 affluenti, di cui 17 lunghi più di 1.500 chilometri, alla fine della sua corsa riversa nell’Oceano Atlantico, il 20% dell’acqua dolce di tutta la Terra. La visita è accompagnata da una traccia audio composta appositamente per la mostra da Jean-Michel Jarre e ispirata ai suoni autentici della foresta, come il fruscio degli alberi, i versi degli animali, il canto degli uccelli o il fragore dell’acqua che cade a picco dalle montagne.
