Flood, Alison (4 January 2022). "Caleb Azumah Nelson wins Costa first novel award for Open Water". the Guardian. Archived from the original on 6 January 2022 . Retrieved 7 January 2022. And that, he says, “is where the writing started from”. At first it was “very lyrical essays that were a bit all over the place, to be perfectly honest”. He was working four days a week at the Apple store at Oxford Circus (hard on the feet but very handy for dialogue) and devoting the rest of his time to his photography and writing. “I was sending stuff around to literary agents, because, despite the fact that I was quite young, I really felt I had something to say.” I yelled with joy – the Costa hadn’t been on my radar, I’ve been trying to write the next one

Caleb the spy is the son of Jephunneh. Jephunneh is called a Kenizzite ( Numbers 32:12, Joshua 14:6, 14). The Kenizzites are listed as one of the nations associated with the land of Canaan at the time that God made a covenant with Abraham ( Genesis 15:19). However, Caleb is mentioned alongside the descendants of Judah recorded in 1 Chronicles 4: "And the sons of Caleb the son of Jephunneh: Iru, Elah, and Naam; and the sons of Elah: Kenaz" ( 1 Chronicles 4:15). [5] Numbers 13:6, likewise, lists Caleb as a tribal leader in Judah. Contrarily, the Kenizzites are also generally associated with Kenaz, the son of Esau, making them an Edomite clan (see Genesis 36:40–43). [6] Deeds [ edit ] Gilmartin, Sarah. "Open Water: Promising novel on pervasive racism in London". The Irish Times . Retrieved 7 January 2022. And why not? If anyone knows about true evil in this world, it’s Caleb Lambert. Along with his family, Caleb endured hell at the hands of multiple serial killers throughout his childhood, twisting his young mind into the mess it is today. Forever installed that need to “scratch an itch.” Verse 30 of chapter 13 reads "And Caleb stilled the people toward Moses, and said: 'We should go up at once, and possess it; for we are well able to overcome it. '" [5] Caleb and Joshua said the people should trust God and go into the land; the other ten spies, being fearful and rebellious, argued that conquering the land was impossible and immoral. The Israelites wandered in the wilderness for forty years until all of that generation, except Joshua and Caleb, died (Numbers 14:29–30). After the forty years of wandering and five more years of war within Canaan, Caleb was 85 years old; yet he was as strong as ever and able to fight the same Anakites that had frightened his countrymen. His confidence was born out of his absolute faith in the promises of God (Joshua 15:13–14). According to The Jewish Encyclopedia, "since 'Caleb' signifies dog, it has been thought that the dog was the totem of a clan". [1] The New American Standard Exhaustive Concordance states that the name Kaleb (Caleb) is related to the word for "dog" ( keleb). [2] The Bible was written down centuries before Hebrew diacritics were introduced, and there is no certain knowledge of how the name was pronounced when the biblical text was written. Caleb's report balanced the appeal of the land and its fruits with the challenge of making a conquest.

I love how Caleb is recounting this promise to Joshua as a reason for his next ask. Caleb stands on and in the promise of God and is not willing to lose out on all that God has for him, no matter what stands in his way.

Caleb Is an Incredibly Bold and Faithful Character

Samuel 25:3 states that Nabal, the husband of Abigail before David, was "a Calebite" (Hebrew klby). [7] It is not stated whether this refers to one of the Calebs mentioned in the Bible, or another person bearing the same name.
