About this deal

CoolStance Copra meal contains 8-10% oil as coconut oil, and only 11% NSC which makes it a unique feed for horses. Coconut oil is very different from many of the other vegetable oils commonly fed to horses. Coconut oil is highly saturated, which makes it very stable (ie. not prone to rancidity). Coconut oil also has a high content of medium chain fatty acids (MCFA), which provide a ready source of non glucose energy for exercise. Coconut oil is also rich in the fatty acid "lauric acid" which possess antibacterial, antifungal and antiprotozoal properties. This may be of benefit to immune function. However, not all copra meal is the same. Copra meal is made from the white meat of coconuts, and does not contain any husk or shell. It is produced in many different countries including Papua New Guinea, Indonesia, and The Philippines. The processing methods and quality of the copra meal produced can vary considerably. For instance, poor-quality Asian copra meal is mostly chemically extracted, direct (smoke) dried and can contain high levels of aflatoxins. Hence it's imperative that horse owners ensure they only buy premium quality copra meal from a reputable source. The copra meal previously known in Australia as Cool Fuelis produced by suitably accredited and audited coconut oil mills.. This copra meal is of very high quality and has been safely fed to horses and cattle in Australia for over 20 years under the Cool Fuellabel. This premium copra meal was rebranded by Stance Globaland is now exclusively available as CoolStance. This copra meal is regularly tested for nutrient and antitoxin content. It is of assured quality. Whilst the name has changed, the feed has stayed the same, and will continue to be of the same high quality. We recommend in summer months not leaving feed more that 12 hours once mixed with water and 24 hours in winter months.

CoolStance® has a unique aroma and taste, which most horses like. A small number of horses can find the product unusual and can be slow to take to it. Start with small amounts and build up slowly. Persist, as the results are worth the effort.Oil is the most useful non starch source of extra energy for athletic horses. It contains 2 to 3 times more energy than starch or protein and once horses have adapted to it, oil is well accepted, digested and metabolized. Horses readily adapt to oil-rich diets and burn it to produce valuable energy for their muscles during medium and high intensity exercise. CoolStance Copra is one of the very few feeds that is low in NSC, high in fibre and a great source of digestible energy. Rich in Medium Chain Triglycerides (MCT) which are absorbed directly into the portal blood and provide readily digestible energy. MCT are unlike most other oils (soy, corn, flaxseed) which are polyunsaturated, and are slowly digested. CoolStance® does not contain any husk or shell. It is made from the white meat of the coconut. High fibre (20%) comes from the flesh of the coconut.

Horses were designed to eat little and often and usually graze for 16-18 hours per day. Feeding twice per day may cause “insulin spikes” which can predispose horses to insulin resistance. This can be avoided by dividing the meals into 3 or 4 feedings a day. If feeding more than twice per day is not practical, feed the hay in a “slow feeding” hay net which forces the horse to eat the hay over many hours.Medium work – The horse weighs 500kg and is mainly schooled up to 6 times a week for up to an hour, this includes jumping. We would recommend feeding 1kg – 2kg of Copra split between two feeds. Horse owners who add coconut oil or copra meal to their horses’ diets are doing so to increase fat intake and thus boost the horse’s calorie density. Copra is good for horses and helps to develop shiny coats. The risk of rancidity is high with a fat content around 8%. However, copra’s short- and medium-chain saturated fat acids are less vulnerable than those found in polyunsaturated fats. Due to rancidity concerns, copra should not be fed after long storage. Horses will refuse to eat any product that is not in their taste. Their sensitivity is high to rancid fat and they are almost certain to reject it. If you find a product that contains copra meal as its base, you might be confronted with a few issues depending upon the specific fortification added to the feed. If unfortified, two concerns are notable.

Premium Copra Meal is best fed as a wet mash. Introduce into your horses diet gradually over a two week period. It is recommeded that Premium Copra Meal be fed with a complete mineral suppliment if used as your horses base diet. A second possibility is that the feed has a zinc-to copper ratio imbalance, which hay can’t correct. Some copra meal may be high in copper, but low in zinc. The ideal ratio of zinc to copper should be between 3:5 and 5:1, but some copra may have as low as 2:2. Like the calcium-to-phosphorus ratio, the appropriate zinc-to-copper ratio is vital for proper development of young horses. This mineral imbalance can be corrected by taking a vitamin or mineral supplement, particularly one that is high in zinc. We combine feed ingredients for a very good reason, and that is because they each bring their own unique set of nutrients to the diet. Being high in phosphorus and low in calcium is actually USEFUL because so often we end up with high calcium in diets and phosphorus is a sometimes hard to come by and relatively expensive nutrient. So when we can use naturally high phosphorus ingredients it helps to fill this requirement in a diet. By-products of the oil industry are commonly used in animal feeds and are often nutritious additions to a diet. Copra is a by-product of coconut oil production from the dried white flesh of the coconut (not the dark husk or hull). Because of processing, copra is often brownish in color, not the bright white of store-bought coconut. When CoolStance is soaked in water, it will swell to at least 3 times the volume. If we feed it dry will CoolStance swell up and hurt my horse?

Nutrient Specifications - Typical Analysis

If you’re using cold water, leave for 5 minutes before feeding. If you’re using warm/hot water, it will be ready to feed straight away or once it’s cooled to a suitable temperature. Mix well before feeding. Premium Copra Meal is the ideal choice for horses in light to medium work who do not require high energy feeds. It is an excellent weight gain feed that can be used to boost any premix feed, or fed mixed with chaff and minerals as a balanced base diet. For most horses, CoolStance and hay will provide the required amounts of minerals and vitamins. *For yearlings and brood mares, a balanced mineral and vitamin supplement may be required. Generally any feed that contains <12% NSC is considered safe to feed. For example, if a starch level is 10% and sugar 10% this would total 20% NSC which would be considered high NSC and an unsafe feed.

Coolstance Copra Feeding Guide

Perfect for Performance and Gastric Health: Owners with horses in hard work will appreciate CoolStance’s benefits as a readily available source of energy. The Lauric acid in coconut oil provides added advantages for horses with or prone to gastric ulcers, thanks to it being associated with having antimicrobial, antiviral and immune-boosting effects. For enhanced protection, CoolStance can be combined with Ulcabuf. CoolStance® has a unique aroma and taste, which most horses like. A small number of horses can find the product unusual and can be slow to take to it. Start with small amounts and build up slowly. Persist, as the results are worth the effort. Do you feed CoolStance® wet or dry? High levels of NSC in horse feed can have detrimental effects to horses and ponies that are insulin resistant, prone to tying up or are in other ways, metabolically challenged. So selecting a feed that is low in NSC is particularly important for these types of horses. Similarly, high NSC feeds can also cause or contribute to the above issues.
