It is just over 25 years since the release of Time Out of Mind, in September 1997, rekindled Bob Dylan’s career. He was then 56, a legend with a glorious past behind him and a much less auspicious future. The 1990s had not been good to him. The songs had stopped flowing. He had not released any original material since the rightly slated Under the Red Sky, in 1990, recording just two albums of traditional material, Good as I Been to You (1992) and World Gone Wrong (1993). Digital versions of the complete (five disc) and highlights (two disc) editions of Bob Dylan – Fragments – Time Out of Mind Sessions (1996-1997): The Bootleg Series Vol.17 will be available on all streaming platforms on Friday, January 27. Fragments is the latest chapter in the Bootleg Series which digs deep into the archives of Bob Dylan to reveal a whole series of previously unreleased recordings including studio outtakes, alternate versions and live performances. This time the focus is on the multiple Grammy award-winning album Time Out Of Mind, originally released in 1997. Ian Corbridge gets immersed for Louder Than War and once again finds an almost unparalleled collection of riches from an album considered by many to be one of Dylan’s finest.

Fragments – Time Out of Mind Sessions (1996-1997): The Bootleg Series Vol.17 follows the evolution of songs written for the album, from intimate early incarnations in the previously unreleased 1996 Teatro sessions featuring Dylan (vocals, guitar, and piano), Daniel Lanois (guitar and organ), Tony Garnier (bass) and Tony Mangurian (drums and percussion) through incandescent live renditions (also previously unreleased) showcasing Dylan and his touring ensemble channeling the songs on-stage from 1998-2001. Disc 4 contains 12 previously unreleased live versions of songs on the album although most seem to be sourced from unofficial recordings which have been circulating around the Dylan community for many years so may not be anything new to the most ardent of fans. And this is not the first time Dylan has bootlegged the bootleggers. A personal highlight is the seriously brooding live version of Not Dark Yet from Sheffield in 2000, given that I attended this concert. The version of Til’ I Fell In Love With You from Buenos Aires is also raucous and totally committed and probably the best version I have ever heard of this song. As ever, these live versions allow Dylan to continue to breathe new life and meaning into every song with ever-changing arrangements on the road so are worthy additions to the collection. (There were production issues that made it impossible to put out in time for Christmas.) Disc Five – Bonus Disc (Previously Released on The Bootleg Series Vol. 8: Tell Tale Signs: Rare and Unreleased 1989–2006) There is little doubt that Time Out Of Mind is an album which has a very significant place both in the life of Bob Dylan and the collections of his fans, myself included, having always regarded it as one of his greatest bodies of work. To give this some context, Dylan had not released an album of original material for seven years since Under The Red Sky in 1990 and many were casting doubts on his ongoing longevity as a creative artist. And it appears that Dylan himself may have shared some of this doubt, having talked openly through those years about having enough songs to sing, perhaps questioning or even justifying the need not to write many more. But fortunately, in the snowy winter of 1996, Dylan finally found a spark of inspiration, perhaps fuelled by his desire to plunder the archives of his peers from which he originally gained so much stimulation at the start of his career, and all that was about to change.The album features seminal recordings from the artist’s coffeehouse era (Gerde’s Folk City, 1962), his mythic 1963 breakout concerts at New York’s Town Hall and Carnegie Hall, a duet with Joan Baez from the historic March on Washington (August 28, 1963), definitive performances from his European and world tours of 1965 and 1966, incandescent moments from the 1964 and 1965 Newport Folk Festivals and more.
