This book will link well to any seaside topic and has links to the KS1 Geography curriculum of continents and oceans. Vocabulary, Prediction, Clarification, Retrieval and Inference and are all covered in this unit. This unit could easily be extended into numerous more lessons including many incidental writing opportunities for descriptive settings, diary writing and letters. The book has endless possibilities. Divide the class into small groups. Give each a selection of three items, plus access to as many clothes pegs as they need. How would these creatures move? With each child holding part of the creature, groups must animate them like puppets, making them swim around the room. Its playful sophistication conveys a complexity of ideas that linger in the mind long after the book has been closed, encouraging discussion and inspiring all kinds of responses.

Flotsam” is a 2007 Caldecott Award winning book by David Wiesner, author of the popular books, “Tuesday” and “The Three Pigs.” In this story, a young boy discovers a mysterious camera from the sea that eventually shows him another world under the sea. “Flotsam” is surely one classic that cannot be beat.

It is mostly told through the perspective of the camera after a young boy finds the vintage camera on the beach. He develops the film and it tells an adventurous and imaginative story of all the places the camera has been.
