About this deal

Follow these simple instructions to get started with the Harry the Dirty Dog unit study and lapbook. This short story never goes old with time. Made superb by the illustrator's dexterity with the pen.

He ran to a corner of the garden and started to dig furiously. Soon he jumped away from the hole barking short, happy barks.

Grandma has come to visit and she has brought a gift for Harry. She has knitted him a doggie sweater. Harry feels warm and snug in it, but he just hates the flowers. His dog friends all laugh at him when he goes for a walk. He decides to get rid of the sweater. I grew up reading about Harry the Dirty Dog and I quite liked him, so when I saw a recent reprint of the story collection, I just had to buy it. This was before I had a son or was expecting one. When I re-read the stories many years after my childhood, I still smiled at No Roses for Harry. How I could relate to the gift of an unattractive sweater. Harry's solution is rather ingenious. Show your student what an exclamation point is in the text of the book. Demonstrate how you read a sentence with emphasis when an exclamation point is at the end. You may want to go through the entire text together and count the exclamation points that you find. Encourage your student to practice reading these sentences with enthusiasm and excitement! Lu knows this story from the Scholastic dvd, but was pleased to read it with me. His favorite part was the unraveling of the sweater by the bird. He also enjoyed Harry's failed attempts to ditch the sweater. The illustrations bothered him a lot though. They all have a very green tinge, at least in the copy we borrowed. The book is mostly green and brown. The effect was that the moment the book ended, Lu got out crayons and paper to "color the book better." That's an reaction I've had, but it was still funny to see it in a 3 year old. Like all the Harry stories, this has wonderful illustrations and great humour. A really fun dog story, highly recommended.

It was wonderful to be home. After dinner, Harry fell asleep in his favorite place, happily dreaming of how much fun it had been getting dirty. He slept so soundly, he didn't even feel the scrubbing brush he'd hidden under his pillow.Harry hates taking baths, so he runs away from home and becomes the dirtiest dog ever. He becomes so dirty, that his family no longer recognizes him!

A boy cares for all the neighbors' plants while they’re away on summer vacations—and in the process turns his home into a leafy paradise. Though, initially, his parents’ don’t quite see it that way: “In the morning when the family had breakfast, they were surrounded by plants in the kitchen. It was like having a picnic in the woods! But Tommy’s father didn’t seem to enjoy it at all.” Don't miss Harry the Dirty Dog! This funny picture book about the strong-willed dog who really doesn't want a bath stands the test of time. After several attempts to lose it, it kept getting returned to him. He had to wear it on the way home. Then, he finds a loose end--he starts to pull. A bird swoops down and takes the end, and flies away with all of it. Harry the Dirty Dog has become a classic, entertaining young readers for decades. Perfect for young fans of dogs...especially ones who also don't always want a bath! She had an eye,” Hagen says. “She always did.” "Harry the Dirty Dog," illustrations by Margaret Bloy Graham, words by Gene Zion, 1956. (Courtesy)No Roses for Harry is about a dog who receives a sweater from his grandma for his birthday and its green with orange roses and he does not like it. He does everything he can to try and get the sweater off but nothing works, until a little friend takes Harry's sweater and turns it into something useful.
