About this deal

In the 2013 SF Spirits Competition, Auchentoshan Three Wood Single Malt Scotch won a Double Gold while their classic won a silver. So they win awards but they hardly run the table. For a long time, the best vodkas were judged on their neutrality (the less flavour the better, right?). Long viewed as a spirit for mixing, not sipping, it played second fiddle to gin, tequila, rum and er, pretty much everything else. We love clever word play as much as we love a delicate nose with notes of vanilla and coconut, but it was only the latter that was needed to see Cardi Bay Vodka awarded a Master medal in this year’s tasting.

The bottle is created using part recycled glass and uses sustainable cork stoppers from the Portuguese cork forest, which protects the habitat of wildlife – especially birds. It is distilled in an iStill, using a fifth of the energy of a normal still and ALL fruit and botanical waste is re-used or composted. For those looking for a little extra indulgence or an after-dinner digestif, Asda has revealed two new flavoured Cream Liqueurs; an Extra Special Blonde Chocolate Cream Liqueur and an Extra Special Chocolate Orange Cream Liqueur. These are also both endorsed by the Good Housekeeping Institute. Our panel – made up of 10-accredited spirits experts and vodka-loving consumers – put 20 vodkas to the test. Each was tried neat and blind, to avoid brand bias, then followed by some water to dilute and soften the alcohol and bring out the core flavours.

That said, triple distilled isn’t bad either. Just another wrinkle to add to an already complex spirit… which makes it all the more fun! The quality of the base spirit is also better than ever, with many companies deciding to bring out some top quality vodkas as part of their ranges, How is it Made? Spirytus Rektyfikowany East London’s 58 & Co Distillery has created this Gold-winning vodka entirely from 100% British wheat spirit.

From a family-run potato farm to a Gold medal-winning vodka, the artisan producers at Devon Cove have proven that quality raw materials are paramount in creating superior spirits. Kazakhstan is a country with a hard name to spell. It is also a country that isn’t typically associated with vodka production, but it really should be, as we can attest after sampling the lovely Snow Queen. Some of the new lines have been ’endorsed’ by the Good Housekeeping Institute, and hold the logo as a stamp of quality. Another contribution from the French, Ciroc, is an innovative vodka brand that we love. The vodka is distilled from French grapes and is distilled five times for an extra smooth flavour. Expect touches of fresh citrus from this brand, and try their other unique flavours like their limited edition white grape or summer watermelon.Russian Standard uses the finest Russian wheat grains to produce one of the best vodka brands on the market. The vodka is distilled with pure glacial waters from Lake Lodga. The two components come together beautifully at the distillery in St Petersburg to create one of the purest-tasting spirits you can get your hands on. There is a slight hint of spiciness from the grains in this Russian vodka, and that only adds to its allure. There was also talk of litchi fruit somewhere in there. Whatever you find in the taste, you’ll have to agree that this is delicious tasting vodka.
