There are 2 buttons (one either side) and a simple press releases your phone, even for a short time after the engine is turned off. However as far as durability goes I will reserve judgement because I am now on my second charger - hence 4 stars instead of 5. The first one worked perfectly for maybe 2 months, then I noticed on occasion a hesitation in the unit clamping my phone meaning I was on the move before it clamped, then sometimes it refused to release on button press.

I have only used it twice so can't comment on longevity but the clip to fit to your air grill is well designed.
