The games experts at Hasbro, the brand behind Cluedo have chosen three of the spookiest Tudor properties in the UK (Rothely Lakehouse, Northumberland; Horton Court, Gloucestershire and Selworthy Farmhouse, Somerset) and are giving Cluedo fans the chance to fully immerse themselves in the mystery with a Cluedo Escape Playcation. The Cluedo escape room in a box game is the first in a planned series of scenarios, all of which will be standalone experiences according to a Hasbro representative at Essen Spiel 2022. The series of escape room board games accompanies a relaunch of the classic crime-solving board game planned for 2023, publisher Hasbro announced during its Investor Day earlier this week. The players must escape from the mansion before pointing the finger at their prime suspect using the clues to hand. Instead of racing against each other to solve the crime first via the iconic combination of who, where and with what, players must now work together to explore the mansion’s rooms and solve puzzles to uncover the solution. Tudor Close in Rottingdean, near Brighton, is described as being the inspiration for Cluedo’s iconic board layout. Early editions of the murder-mystery board game were called Murder at Tudor Close, before it was later retitled by publisher Waddingtons.These are Rothley Lakehouse in Northumberland and the Grade I listed Horton Court in Gloucestershire.

Cluedo was created by Anthony E. Pratt in 1943, inspired by his time performing in country homes as a pianist, the popularity of other mystery party games in post-war England and Pratt’s own interest in crime novels. Elva Pratt, Anthony’s wife, co-designed the game and provided the board’s original artwork. As well as playing with up to six people, Cluedo Escape can be played in a single-player solo mode.
