It is narrated from Late Sheikh Bahayi (R.A.) that he said: Muqaddas e Ardabeli (R.A.) was asked about the factor that helped him to reach such a high position? My Lord! Then how could he remain in torments when he hopefully relies upon Thy past forbearance, compassion and mercy?

O' my chiefs and masters, I have concentrated with you all, you are all my leaders and devices the day of my need, indigence and demands before Allah, I take you (all) as a means to Almighty Allah, with love and nearness to you (all) I hope for deliverance from Allah, you should act as my hope before Allah, O' my masters, O' the friends of Allah, may Allah's blessing be on you all. For verily, Thou hast ordained for Thy bondsmen Thy worship and bidden them to supplicate unto Thee and hast assured them (of Thy) responseO' Allah! Be in friend with those that paid them allegiance, and be in enmity with their enemies, help those that render assistance to them and let down those that betray them. In a very eloquent way, Imam 'Ali (a) explains that this request is not a secondary or marginal one and one cannot continue without it; rather, for him, it enjoys utmost importance since he (a) cannot tolerate God's punishment. Imam 'Ali (a) admits that Divine punishments are severe while he (a) is so weak and so too are his body and skin. Hence his declaration:

Hellfire is not the destiny of those who have real faith (i.e. those who would keep their faith up to that stage and would not lose it during their lifetime, while dying or later on) even if they may have some shortcomings. Even if they were put in hell for a short while, that would be for their purification and preparation to enter paradise. However, we must be very cautious and careful and not take any risk since there are some sins that cause one's faith to be lost and one's du'as to be unaccepted. There are also some sins that change and transform the blessings of God into calamities and difficulties. Enumerating several types of sins, at the beginning of Du'a Kumayl Imam 'Ali (a) says,Kumayl Ibn Ziyad Nakha'i was a confidant amongst the companions of Imam Ali Ibn Abi Talib (as.) and this sublime Du'a was first heard from the beautiful, though anguished, voice of Imam Ali. How then can I bear the retributions and the punishments of the hereafter which are enormous and of intensive sufferings, of prolonged period and perpetual duration, and which shall never be alleviated for those who deserve the same as those retributions will be the result of Thy wrath; and Thy punishment which neither the heavens nor the earth can withstand and bear! My Lord! Towards the end of the du'a, Imam 'Ali (a) once again draws attention toward forgiveness and shows that it is of the utmost importance to such an extent that he (a) requests to be forgiven of all his sins precisely on that very night and indeed at that very moment: Alas! That is not the concept (held by us) of Thee nor has Thy grace such a reputation nor does it resemble that which Thou hast awarded by Thy kindness and generosity to those who believe in Thy unity I definitely conclude that hadst Thou not ordained punishment for those who disbelieved in Thee, and hadst Thou not decreed Thy enemies to remain in hell, Ibn e Hajib said: You must bring a baby wolf and feed the sheep with sufficient fodder from dawn to dusk every day. At night, bring the baby wolf in front of the sheep so that he loses all the fatness gained throughout the day on sighting the baby wolf. Perform this act regularly, you will not find any change in the sheep’s weight till it remains with you.
