About this deal

This is a beautifully simple story, which virtually all children will be able to relate to. Most of us have been in a position where we’ve delayed doing something due to fear, which makes Jabari a character who is easy to engage and empathise with. Adult readers will also relate to the father, who is patient, supportive and quietly encouraging. We get a great sense of Jabari’s trepidation building through the book, and the lively illustrations provide a real sense of energy and increasing excitement. The pictures are cleverly drawn from a range of perspectives, with the reassuring presence of the father in virtually every scene. This adorable story with one cute-as-can-be goggle wearing boy named Jabari is filled with bravery and deep breaths and patience. A story that says when you’re ready, take a deep breath, and JUMP! Help students use their visualizing skills as they listen to the story without looking at the pictures. Tara: 4 stars. There were a few good "perspective" pictures, such as Jabari's looking down from the diving board from a scared kid's point of view. In fact, he boasts about what a great jumper he is and even tells his dad he is not scared at all. Yet, when it is time to climb the ladder, Jabari feels a little bit tired. Maybe he should take a rest?

Jabari Jumps by Gaia Cornwall is a beautiful EYFS/KS1 story

When Jabari goes to an outdoor pool with his family he decides to give the diving board a go. Although when he gets up there, it looks a lot higher and scarier than from below. I liked the way dad encouraged him, no pressure but trying to help him achieve what he wanted to do.

Looking for something different

The story describes how Jabari, a little boy, overcomes his fears at the swimming pool. Jabari has finished his swimming lessons and passed his test and now feels he’s ready to conquer his fear of the diving board. His dad reassures him that it’s okay to be scared and helps him reframe his thoughts by seeing his actions as leading to a surprise. Jabari loves surprises, so this helps him eventually take the leap confidently off the board and into the pool. Hello, friends! Today’s book is Jabari Jumps by Gaia Cornwall, a sweet and simple story with an important lesson on overcoming fears. Little Jabari had just finished his swimming lessons and passed his swim test. He decided that he was now ready to jump off the diving board and today was the day. He watched all the other children jump off the board and declared it looked easy. However, when he got to the bottom of the board he looked up and saw how high it was. He felt scared but he didn’t want to let anyone know how he felt. A daunting gaze downward, past Jabari’s toes that curl around the edge of the board, makes the water look incredibly far away, and when seen from behind, he seems as high up as the skyscrapers in the distance. It’s a lovely, knowing account of a big “first” in a child’s life. These activities can be used by the whole group, at stations or centers, or provide student choice. They’re perfect for differentiation and focusing on specific learning goals and skills.

The typical firsts of school are here: riding the bus, making friends, sliding on the playground slide, counting, sorting shapes, laughing at lunch, painting, singing, reading, running, jumping rope, and going on a field trip. While the days are given ordinal numbers, the song skips the cardinal numbers in the verses, and the rhythm is sometimes off: “On the second day of kindergarten / I thought it was so cool / making lots of friends / and riding the bus to my school!” The narrator is a white brunette who wears either a tunic or a dress each day, making her pretty easy to differentiate from her classmates, a nice mix in terms of race; two students even sport glasses. The children in the ink, paint, and collage digital spreads show a variety of emotions, but most are happy to be at school, and the surroundings will be familiar to those who have made an orientation visit to their own schools. Jabari Jumps - Storyline Online TEACHERS’ GUIDE Jabari Jumps - Storyline Online

Rabe follows a young girl through her first 12 days of kindergarten in this book based on the familiar Christmas carol. While this is a fairly bland treatment compared to Deborah Lee Rose and Carey Armstrong-Ellis’ The Twelve Days of Kindergarten (2003), it basically gets the job done. A wonderful book about thinking you are ready to do something, getting so nervous that you aren't sure you can do it anymore, and overcoming your nervousness (with help!) so that you are able to do it after all. A wonderful message. Jabari Jumps by Gaia Cornwall is a great picture book that reinforces the themes of courage, determination and summer fun!
