I borrowed the audiobook edition of this book from our local library and listened to it with the kids in the car as we travelled to and from a camping trip over the weekend. My six year old was more engaged in the story than my four year old, but they both enjoyed it and are looking forward to watching the original movie version. I did consider, when rating this book, that it was aimed for a much younger reader audience... around 10/11 age the same as the main character. This attributes to how simply it is written. However, other books aimed at children I still read and absolutely love, His Dark Materials by Philip Pullman... Also I feel even an 11 year old may be more worldly wise and literate the this book portrays. Fold the top point down so that the tip meets the bottom of where the previous folds come together. Fold the entire plane in half, in on itself. This creates the snub nose, which gives the Bulldog Dart its name. Principal photography took place in both country and metro Western Australia, though the film states the setting as being in New South Wales (given they "drive down to Sydney"). Locations used for filming include an abandoned school in Roleystone, an old house in Baldivis, HBF Stadium (previously known as Challenge Stadium until 2014), Whiteman Park, the Perth Zoo, and the Aviation Heritage Museum in Bull Creek. Within seconds I was up, wearing my glasses and sitting on the couch in my pajamas watching TV. A skyscraper had a hole in its side. People were falling from skyscrapers WHEN A CHILDREN'S TV PROGRAM SHOULD HAVE BEEN SHOWING. If the movie is anything like the book I will be a puddle of tears in the cinema. It is a really endearing story and I feel for young Dylan. It's a lovely story.Do the same with the left corner. The top left point should exactly meet the diagonal right edge of the airplane. Paper Planes is middle grade rather than YA, and I don’t read a lot of it. Ok, any really. But I have a 3yo and a 6yo and I’m assuming it’s going to become a lot more common in my household soon and this one seemed like a pretty good place to start. Dylan is a very likable kid and the narrative is charmingly conversational, very much fitting to a 12yo boy. Before reading this I didn’t even know there was a World Paper Plane Championships but google tells me that it is apparently true! I thought it was such a fun concept to base a story around – who hasn’t made a paper plane and tried to fly it as far as you can? Although the tone is light hearted and fun, the book does delve into a few issues such as schoolyard bullying and the best way to handle it, ultra-competitiveness, the thrill of a first crush as well as grief and how had it can be to go on. Each are handled very well – just enough focus without tipping the mood too seriously and Dylan thinks his way through each challenge and you can see him really learning things as he gets through each round. The paper planes he makes and how he has to adjust them if necessary are rather a good metaphor for other things kids need to deal with in life and how they must adjust in different situations.

Webster has made it very easy to become attached and invested in these characters and you hope they survive such horrific situations. This novel also points out, albeit subtly, that there are no differences between people of different religions. Niko prays, but is afraid his father will find out. And his best friend is Muslim. Niko doesn’t understand why religion should play a role in who die or lives. In fact, it seems like dull chance whether they will survive. Fold the top corners in so they meet at the middle. There should be a small triangle tail hanging out beneath these folds. The writing was simplistic, as it tends to be in most middle grade novels, but I was engrossed from the very beginning. I admittedly don't know much about the Bosnian war and I don't tend to read much historical fiction but this book was super easy to read. Along the way he makes unlikely new friends, clashes with powerful rivals and comes to terms with his family's past before facing his greatest challenge – to create a paper plane that will compete with the best in the world.Franklin, Garth (12 November 2013). First you fold the paper in half lengthwise, and then unfold. This initial crease is simply a guideline for the next folds. Paper Planes tells the story of 12-year old Niko. He lives a normal life with his parents and two siblings in Bosnia, until he is awoken early one morning to a phonecall. His brother's friend is calling to warn them. The war is coming. However, I'd take great care to tailor this book to the child and the child's maturity, not giving this to just any child aged 10 to 14.While there are far more advanced paper airplanes, this one, in my opinion, is the perfect balance of complexity and accessibility for the Average Paper Airplane Joe. It has far more folds than the previous two models, and also flies the best and farthest. Pay attention with this one, folks, and the payoff is well worth it.
