About this deal

I really enjoyed the section on household spirits. The author takes the reader through out the house and around the northern hemisphere. While a short book and I understand not all could be provided, I would have loved to see more here again from the southern regions of the planet. While much has been written about our witchy history from places like Scotland, Ireland and Norway; I would love to see more around other cultures as well. From the title, I did not take this was a book devoted to the way white cultures interact with magic. And seeing so many cultures left out was a bit of a disappointment. That being said, however, if you're looking for a book that pulls in deities, mythologies and magic from these northern regions this book is right up your alley.

Together, Books 1 & 2 of The House Witch make this my favorite series of 2022. Full marks, this is exactly the type of novel I want more of... and fortunately Book 3 is scheduled to release in a few months. For one thing, if Annika and Fin are to continue their romance, they’ll need to sort out the pesky issue of Fin’s being a commoner—before Annika is forced into a political marriage that interferes with her own carefully laid plans.Okay, I LOVED it! Lots of interesting things going on in the world, it was great and I am super excited to continue the series. There was one character whose representation I question, but I feel no ill will was intended and since they were such a small part of the story it didn't effect my rating (also, technically I like the character). Can Fin successfully hide his secret and protect his heart? Or will the chaos of the castle and its good hearted people get the best of him? The House Witch is an alternative spirituality book for those interested in exploring energies of the hearth and the home. It is written in an easy-to-read format, and I would describe this as an overview of some age-old traditions mixed with folklore and a sprinkle of magic.

Further complicating things, Fin’s estranged father is on his way to Daxaria, an unexpected and unappreciated arrival that’s bound to wreak even more havoc in his son’s life. But Fin’s secret identity doesn’t stay hidden for long. After all, it’s not every day a house witch and his kitten familiar, Kraken, take to meddling in imperial affairs. As his powers are gradually discovered by the court, Fin finds himself involved in a slew of intrigues: going head-to-head with knights with less-than-chivalrous intentions, helping to protect the pregnant queen, fending off the ire of the royal mage, and uncovering a spy in the castle. And that’s only the beginning—because Fin’s past is catching up with him just as his love life is getting complicated . . .Obviously this is self-published so I'm willing to look past a lot of shortcomings. No, it's not excellent writing. And I often feel the author's heavy hand and have to imagine what the author is going for and consider if I like that idea or not (generally the answer is yes), so it's not really something I'd hold against them. I almost never dnf a book, especially one that I can't return but I'm halfway through and I can't keep going. Worst of all this book seems so outdated. Like it was written in 1990 and the author had never read a fantasy book since. The female characters are all tired tropes and the male characters all exist to give lip service to how cool and noble and smart the main character is. And the brothel is not even the only part where he gets a little gay just out of nowhere. He kept trying to bait Mr. Howards by comming onto him knowing full well it was not well recieved. It felt unnecesary and dragged out. While it might had been funny one time, this grew old fast. My point is that for all he complained about why people thought he was gay he sure goes out of his way to make people think he is in this book.If atleast 3 characters in here showed some level of atleast emotional maturity, or intelligence, or intellect, or even just basic thought and understanding. The kingdom of Daxaria felt less like a kingdom and more like an unorganized circus. Her bright teal silk gown was cut in a wide V, exposing her flawless chest with modest cleavage" (102). A group of teens/near teens go party in the local haunted house at Halloween time. Lana (Emily Bader) and Shane (Darren Mann) are the only characters introduced which sets them up as last to go.
