The story actually starts out pretty sad. I thought it was a bit heavy for a kids book. The little boy's dog he loved so much dies and he gets sad and depressed. Billy and his mum have moved into a new house just before Christmas, but Billy isn't very full of festive cheer, as his beloved old dog has passed away.
