About this deal

What’s going on? What might have happened to provoke this scene? What’s noticeable about the setting? What time of day is it, and which season? Enter the witty, intriguing world of Weslandia! Now that school is over, Wesley needs a summer project. He’s learned that each civilisation needs a staple food crop, so he decides to sow a garden and start his own - civilization, that is. He turns over a plot of earth, and plants begin to grow. They soon tower above him and bear a curious-looking fruit. As Wesley experiments, he finds that the plant will provide food, clothing, shelter, and even recreation. It isn’t long before his neighbors and classmates develop more than an idle curiosity about Wesley - and exactly how he is spending his summer vacation. Text Rationale: It’s another Bookwagon day in our house. The kids were so excited to get their latest books in the post. The stages are based on a measure of readability called an ATOS score. It is a formula designed to guide students and teachers to appropriate-level texts. It is based on a number of predictors - average sentence length, average word length and word difficulty level.

Research fruit-bearing plants. Do blind taste tests for different fruits and see how many you can recognise. Invent new recipes with fruit. urn:lcp:weslandia0000flei:lcpdf:9c7e8cf4-2e57-46f2-acba-e919b8f0cb02 Foldoutcount 0 Identifier weslandia0000flei Identifier-ark ark:/13960/t56f4rg9r Invoice 1652 Isbn 9781442045972 Wesley is an outsider, ‘ alone in his town‘, alarming his parents ‘ and the school nurse.’ He has no friends but ‘plenty of tormentors.’ When Wesley latches onto a throwaway comment from his father about using his knowledge in a summer project, ‘Weslandia‘ is the result. Kevin Hawkes’ artwork, with its vibrant colours and unusual perspectives, adds its own humour to Paul Fleischman’s honed and dryly understated text.Gather a collection of advertising materials – it can be interesting to compare modern adverts with older ones, which can be less subtle and therefore easier to analyse. Wesley invites the random seeds flung by the wind to grow in his garden furrows. What grows is not ‘ tomatoes, beans or Brussels sprouts‘ selection of Wesley’s fellow gardeners. Wesley encourages his unknown crop, tending it until he’s able to experiment with what it may offer him. Fruit, juice, tubers, fronds to weave… Wesley builds a whole new industry and civilisation from his crop.

The result is a beautifully-crafted picture book that can be enjoyed by any child ready to engage with its themes. The score is only to be used as a guide. There are a number of factors which can increase the score, one of these is technical language. Where technical language is prevalent the score increases, we, however, have used our own professional judgement to include them in the correct stage. The story is about the development of agriculture which led to the division of labor, system of writing, and ultimately civilization. The book introduces all of these, along with culture as a whole, and economics.

This book is fantastic simply because it has captured a premise that is unintuitive and overlooked, and yet was as much a part of my childhood daydreams as any over-done stories of fairies, witches, or wizards.

5 Creating new civilisations

Spelling Seeds have been designed to complement Writing Roots by providing weekly, contextualised sequences of sessions for the teaching of spelling that include open-ended investigations and opportunities to practise and apply within meaningful and purposeful contexts, linked (where relevant) to other areas of the curriculum and a suggestion of how to extend the investigation into home learning. Produce clear and coherent writing in which the development and organization are appropriate to task, purpose, and audience. (Grade-specific expectations for writing types are defined in standards 22-24 above.) [W.5.4] Wes is not what his parents or other children expect. When a long summer looms and school is out, Wes decides to experiment in farming. He opens a patch of earth knowing that seeds are carried on the wind. A totally new species of versatile flowering plant takes root in his yard. He discovers that the fruit is edible and produces oil that can be used for bug repelling sun screen. Soon he is selling the juices, weaving clothing, and creating games. He has become completely self sufficient and names his experiment, Weslandia. When school begins again in the fall Wes has discovered many new things—especially new friends. They should develop their idea by drawing it, discussing it and refining it, and then mount a campaign to promote and advertise it, including posters and a verbal presentation or TV-style commercial.
