About this deal

Some give a bonus (say 15 points) to the player who went out rather than just letting them score zero. If you write penalty points as positive numbers, that would mean that the player who goes out subtracts 15 from their cumulative score while the other players add the value of the cards remaining in their hands. It is sometimes a good idea to hold onto playable combinations rather than lay them down at the first opportunity. This gives other players fewer combinations to play on and therefore fewer chances to go out. The risk is that if another player does go out a player who has held onto cards will score more penalty points than if they had been laid down. This risk is greater in five- and six-handed games where you may get only one or two turns before a player goes out. And that's it. I'm sure there are plenty of people who prefer other rules, but you can never please everyone and these are the rules I'm going with. Every player pays to or receives from every other player according to the difference between their scores.

Ungava | Pernod Ricard

Game bonus: After a player has reached 100 points he gets a special game bonus, 100 points, added to his overall score. The Ungava Peninsula, after which the gin is named, is to the top right of Hudson Bay is you were to look on a map. I’ve not been and frankly, as it’s described as a treeless tundra and sounds incredibly cold, I’m not going to rush there! Very happy to be corrected on that by anyone who has been – it’s likely stunningly beautiful like the rest of Canada. I further like Empress 1908 Gin paired with fresh citrus. A Tom Collins is a nice drink here. Skip the Gimlet unless you’re using some fresh lime or homemade cordial. Overall, Empress 1908 GinShutout bonus: If the winner won every hand in the game then the points for each hand are doubled before adding the line bonus. I wasn't sure here how to handle it if someone has won all hands except for ones that end in a tie, so for now I'm requiring that you win all hands and none end in a tie to get this bonus. Let me know if you disagree with this. Because cards are scored for the player who melded them, any cards that are melded, whether a new combination or an addition to a combination that is already on the table, are placed in front of the person who melded them, and not on the combination they are added to if that belongs to another player. A wild card can be taken from a run in exchange for the natural card it represents, and that natural card is placed in front of and scores for the player making the exchange. A wild card can be taken from a set of equal cards in exchange for a natural card of the same rank. If a set consisting entirely of wild cards is melded, no cards can be taken from it.

The basic rules common to most or all of these versions of the game will be given first, followed by a survey of the variants that I have come across. Players and CardsI first mixed it with some 1724 tonic. The beverage has a lovely golden tone to it. The tonic really emphasizes the bitter notes of the Ungava. It tastes exceptionally dry. In an odd way this combination makes for a Gin and Tonic that might be to the liking of those who are fans of more bitter drinks. There’s a touch of sweetness, but this is certainly not the Gin and Tonic you’re used to drinking like a sugary sweet soda. Very interesting the way certain notes come out here. Nice. Canada is an exciting outpost with a burgeoning market that has roots in centuries of tradition – and has recently begun innovating with ‘artisanal’ gin. History Fill a glass (Old-Fashioned) with ice cubes. Add Ungava Premium Gin with tonic water, stir well and add a grapefruit wedge for garnish.
