About this deal

The entire construction is made of plastic and along with stiff cushion pads, the old HD series discomfort issues play a role in my life yet again. These are not comfortable when you first buy them or use them new. It takes some time for the pads to soften up and the headband to stop clamping. It needs usage. Neutrality: HD598 > DT990 > HD58X > HD650 (I felt the HD 650 tends to gravitate towards darkness, whereas the HD598 were the most neutral and flat sounding in the bunch with the HD 58X somewhere in the middle with its liveliness in its sound signature) Fitment on the fixture was challenging even though the cups easily covered the artificial ear on my measurement fixture. This resulted in fairly large variations in bass response. I got the two channels to match which is a good sign but still, keep in mind the cautions above in bold. Again, I’ve always said that you can technically mix on any headphone if you understand frequency response, and the 58X is no different.

I started to use the HD58X with a Sound BlasterX G6, which is a very neutral and linear amp. The sound was great, I found it to be really enjoyable. On lower end gear, the gap between quality overall in bass between these two is not significant at all and sometimes feels too close to call which is objectively cleaner. The HD58x Jubilee has very low to end of moderate levels of bass quantity and doesn’t respond very well to bass boosting. If you are a basshead, grab a set of JVC SZ2000’s, haha! Also, due to this tight fit, the headphones won’t come of your heads like the HD 598SE does! So, you won’t have any type of fit issues like you had with the HD 598SE (where if you even sneezed, the headphones would’ve come flying off of your head!). Crinacle also likes the Dusk which is one of the worst IEM that was ever made. I have not met a single person that likes the Dusk in real life. Everyone just says the treble is so painful, they rather not listen to music.Still, the pattern manifests itself on quite a number of songs so I’m inclined to think the 58X is just a little overexcited at times, like your 8-year-old who just drank an entire 2-liter of Surge and won’t stop talking. Bass & Treble In the case of the 58x, its flaws, while apparent, don’t ruin the experience for me when I’m just listening to it on its own. The catch is that these same flaws actually work in the headphones’ favor (for the most part). In other words, With the 58X, you’ll notice everything just seems a bit louder, with a little more oomph and sparkle. There is not too much to add to the description of the HD6XX, because besides the sonic similarities they share the structural ones.

Either that or the “in-the-other-room effect” which is very self-explanatory. You know, that muffled bass-forward character whenever you hear music playing in a different room. This one is easier to correlate with its mangled tuning. The Soundstage is super wide, and you’ll hear pretty much any and every sound you could possibly imagine in-game. Then I upgraded my setup with a Brado Audio Ocean, connected to the Line Out of the G6, and the sound improved as the warm sound of tubes goes really well with dark-sounding headphones like the 58X. If you’re super sensitive to it as I am, you’ll find that it sits nicely in the mix without sounding essy or sibilant; an issue in other headphones like the 400 series from HIFIMAN, M40x, DEVA, etc. Remember when I told you in the HD 598SE’s review that those had one of the most boring and flat sounding bass? Well, these headphones are just the reverse…. They have bass that can bring a smile to anyone’s face from a hardcore bass head to a proper audiophile.

Whoops!

The bass in these headphones is one of the best, if not THE best I have heard from any pair of headphones at this price! The 58X is a fine entry into the series and a headphone that I enjoyed a lot more than I thought I would. The 58X is definitely the most “fun” or “colored” sounding out of the 3, while the 650 is assuredly the warmest and most “syrupy”. While it can and will work for lighter genres like Jazz and Classical, I may not use it full-time for those as I believe the K702 is a much better all-rounder for delicate compositions and lighter acoustic strumming. Video Discussion I don’t know what foreign realm of unrealism you’ve entered our atmosphere from, but the HD58X is far from having any soundstage. I’ll admit you are right about them having a smidgen more than the HD600, but they neither sound out-of-head, nor spacious. They sound congested, narrow, and bland. Imaging is also not a strongsuit. The entire Sennheiser lineup suffers that same truth with the exception being the HD800’s, so they’re certainly not holographic.

I’ve had this discussion with quite a number of people and most seem to agree that even despite the 560S’ almost perfect sound signature, there’s something missing. We’ve got the standard 2-pin termination into each of the cups, and a 3.5mm at the business end + 1/4″ adapter.Again - the main problem they run into is the greatness of the HD600 for a little more money. Take those out of the equation and these are a no brainer. They also get close to those, but not quite as resolving. Sennheiser has done a splendid job in the mids' department! After listening to these headphones did I realize my old HD 598SE actually had the classic veil that Sennheiser was known and sometimes despised for. These headphones have much more full-bodied mids than the HD 598SE and even though these have more forward mids than the HD 598SE, they never felt shouty and too much “in your face”.

It’s definitely not wide like a K702, but it can be out of your head; more so than an HD600 or even a 650.One difference you’ll notice here vs. others in the line is the bass; there’s more of it for sure, but it’s still not over the top. the sound signature may be more appealing and accessible to the average person who knows absolutely nothing about the audiophile hobby and prefers more bass out of their experience. If I could use an analogy, the sound of the 58X is like a photograph that has just a hair too much contrast.
