Rei's stats start out nearly across the board at the completely laughable F0. His Growth stat is S. This sets him up for pretty much exactly the sort of progression that you would expect. Impossibly Cool Clothes: His armor's externals, which allow him to float around in a way similar to Valera's, and which simply float around above him, unattached to anything. The Big Guy: He's noted to be enormous, and his Mauler-type CAD is well suited for the sort of straightforward tactics Big Guys tend to use. As to the romantic subplot, it didn't bother me. Sometimes the heart wants what the heart wants. It's not like Viv isn't deeply conflicted about her attraction. Also, by the end of the book even Grant didn't much care for the company he was keeping. Oh, also, in case people don't know: Stormweaver 3: Metal Gear Metal King will get started immediately after Stormweaver 2! I know that might seem like common sense to many, but one of the reasongs Book 2 has taken so long is because I had to write The Shattered Reigns 2: A Blood of Kings between Iron Prince and this sequel, which I won't have to do for the next one!

Everybody Knew Already: She's REALLY bad at hiding things like her stalking of Rei and the fact that she's Colonel Guest's niece. Especially the latter, which she thinks she can hide, but doesn't realize that because of how influential her family is, there's literally a newspaper article announcing her birth and the fact that the Colonel is her godfather. But there are some times when a line falls flat here and there, some characters who sound a little too much like one another, frequent uses of lines like "dummy" and "jerk" to tease friends, etc. Big Brother Mentor: To a degree, for Rei. He's just as excited for Rei's growth as anyone else is. He also takes time out of his schedule to train Rei beyond what Valera asked him to do. Shadow’s Legacy is a prelude to The Iron Fey: Call of the Forgotten. This novella pictures the splendid wedding of Meghan’s brother, Ethan Chase. The Iron Fey has mild violence but no curse words. Some explicit content is present but there’s nothing not present in the regular YA. The Iron Fey is recommended for ages 12 and up. More Books Like The Iron Fey SeriesMeghan’s life isn’t what you can call ‘extraordinary’, what with her stepfather always forgetting her, her real father having vanished at a picnic, and girls at school teasing her. Not to mention the strange events that happen when she’s around. But since her sixteenth birthday, some strange turn of events makes things even worse. After Rei gets his CAD the Growth S is very secret, so people that don't know about it largely have understandable and reasonable reactions to Rei. They are under the impression that the CAD was wasted on a bad choice leading to a permanently weak and worthless soldier. When he also gets into a prestigious school many students assume that in addition to that he is taking up an even more precious Academy slot for some sort of political reason (the older students that know the Academy better figure something is up, but at this school older students appear to have basically zero interaction with freshmen in any way whatsoever, so that doesn't matter). The issue is that some of the people in the know are very stupid with this information. Except... why is that a bad thing? This is part of what I meant earlier about how inconsistent the alien threat is, but it's inconsistent in what appears to be a rationale way. They are absolutely threats on the battlefield, and they kill soldiers etc, etc, but the decisions made on and off screen do not appear to consider them a strategic threat whatsoever. I think (and hope, because I don't think any other scenario would fit what has been shown) that these robots are almost entirely defensive. It seems like the Archons only want to defend their territory and attempt to retake what humans have recently expanded to, and if humans just stopped expanding the war would pretty much immediately stop. That explains why people that went to the front lines and were exposed to the fighting care a lot about it, but the general bureaucracy of both the military and especially society in general doesn't really prioritize fighting the robots, or care a huge amount about the soldiers that are sent to die in that fight, when they could instead watch the cooler soldiers play gladiator games on tv.

So, about this powerful Ubersuit that the MC has. CADs go from F0 all the way to S in their individual stats. When someone initially gets a CAD hopefully they'll be at least in the high Es, being in the low D's means you have an actual shot of getting into the really good Academies. Being in the high D's means you are right around the best of the 18 year olds. After you graduate hopefully you'll be in the decent Bs (this part I'm more guessing on because while they talk a lot about initial specs in general the talk about later specs is all specifically in the context of the elite Academy they are a part of) but if you want to be elite enough to play sports all day instead of dying on the front-line you'll need to be very high-B or low A. You increase by putting in tons of hard work, but the effectiveness of this is governed by your Growth Stat. A Normal person's Growth stat will start at that normal E to D range and pretty much stay there for their entire career, while all their other stats go up to (hopefully) Bs, As, or even S. Essentially, one of the main character's friends starts pursuing a relationship with the antagonist even after the guy has repeatedly assaulted the main character. There's combat, tons of combat, so much combat that you might be like "But Will, isn't that too much combat?" After I put up one fingerto silence your beautiful mouth, I would whisper "No. And how dare you." Weak, but Skilled: At first. He starts off extremely weak, with all but one of his non-Growth specs at F0, or equivalent to a normal human, and by the time he starts at Galens he's still much weaker than any other student. And yet, he has such a high level of combat skill and intelligence he's able to compete with people a full tier or more above his effective stats. As the book progresses, this becomes more and more downplayed, and by the end, he's on par with other high-level first-years. There is no Romance Sub Plot. The Primary Antagonist ends his last fight which he loses by asking if the main character is dating the two main female characters in the book. So Logan is not going around dating the best friend of the main character. Does she have a type that matches Logan? Yes is she pursuing him nope. Does it look like they will be a couple? Yes. She has an interest in him since he beat the crap out of the people who beat up the main character and is actively discouraging anyone from tryin that again. And the main character wants the former Primary Antagonist to join their team for the External School Tournament.

I just finished Iron Prince, a new release from Bryce O'Connor and Luke Chmilenko. It's a Sci-fi LitRpg with a lot of progression elements. In overall theme I'd say it feels like a several parts Cradle, a couple parts Ender's Shadow, and one part Harry Potter. Maybe also because it has widely varying results, I.E. the guy with the really long, thin sword who was mentioned once by the lasher) Flight: Even more than other users of Externals. Her 8 allow her to float without touching the ground.

The highest-ranked student in Galens Academy's incoming freshman class, the C-ranked Aria is the scion of an extremely influential family, and is expected to follow in her parents' and siblings' footsteps in the arena. Action Girl: The biggest one in the series, if somewhat off-screen. She saw 7 years of brutal combat and survived, though not in one piece. Heir to the Dojo: He doesn't have a dojo, per say, but his mother is a highly ranked CAD user and has been fighting in the professional SCTs for years. He went to a military prep school and his mother drilled him in SCT skills from a young age. If he was just into the person he's into bc theyre attractive, well, the book makes it clear that almost everyone with CAD is attractive and hed probably have some options. Julie Kagawa’s writing doesn’t disappoint! Iron Fey is told in first-person narratives, mostly of Meghan, and the writing is elaborate enough to paint a vivid picture in the reader’s mind. There are plenty of action scenes and those are described well too.

spend the next 6 weeks editing a charity anthology Wraithmarked Creative is publishing later this year (taking us to June 1) Not trying to excuse the guy, he's being racist (classist, name-ist?) against Rei and whatever happened in his family to make him that way is no excuse for how he acts. Personal Bias Disclaimer: I shared this book when it came out a month ago on Facebook, because I thought the cover looked cool and I trusted Bryce and Luke enough to know that the book would at least be good. At that point, I hadn't read it.
