At the time the policeman was shot, Bentley had been under arrest for 15 minutes, and the words he said to Craig—"Let him have it, Chris"—could either have been taken for an incitement to shoot, or for Craig to hand his gun over (one policeman had asked him to hand the gun over just beforehand). At the first door, he recognised the square face of Josef Kramer, with its eyes so deep set that in the dim light its sockets appeared black and empty. The following year, the Home Secretary, Chuter Ede, set up a Royal Commission to look into capital punishment in the UK.

Horrific video shows subway carriage chanting 'F*** the Jews, long live Palestine, we are Nazis and proud'. Albert, who was born in Clayton, near Bradford, and later lived in Huddersfield, travelled all over the country in his part-time post as official executioner.

She walked into the execution chamber,’ the hangman wrote in his autobiography, ‘gazed for a moment at the officials standing round it, then walked on to the centre of the trap where I had made a chalk mark. Brian Bailey highlights Pierrepoint's phrasing relating to hangings; the autobiography reads "I had to hang Derek Bentley", "I had to execute John Christie" and "I had to execute Mrs Louisa Merrifield". When he flew to Germany, he was followed across the airfield by the press, which he described as being "as unwelcome as a lynch mob".

Executioner Pierrepoint by Albert Pierrepoint (2005) Hardcover

John ‘Reg’ Christie, who murdered at least eight women, including his wife, at his flat in Notting Hill. She was the last woman to hang in England, and her 1955 execution paved the way for the abolition of the death penalty. She was then led to the gallows, the noose placed round her neck, her legs strapped together and a white hood pulled over her head. Too short a rope and the shorter fall can end with so little force that the neck doesn’t break and the prisoner slowly strangles to death. It provides a remarkable insight into the role of the executioner and I suppose that someone had to do the job.

During the Second World War Pierrepoint hanged 15 German spies, as well as US servicemen found guilty by courts martial of committing capital crimes in England.
